| @Ulkomaalainen - I can see the connection - keeping watch. Police officers and caretakers/doormen/janitors all do that. I'm sorta thinking through the church offices of doorkeeper, verger, sexton, warden - they overlap and get defined differently in different places, but a warden in some places may have the power to make arrests, and a sexton or verger can be both a doorman (as in keeper of the keys) and a janitor (i.e., caretaker of the property). A police officer, especially in previous times, would walk a beat and take care of the community in the same way a doorman or caretaker does for a church or other property in their charge. But that's from an English perspective - might have been different historically in Germany and Finland. |
