Just For Fun
Can you name the four movies that IMDb thinks best represent these Academy Award winning actors?
Enter a movie in the box below
Correctly named movies will show up below
Answers do not have to be guessed in order
IMDb uses an algorithm to determine the Top 4 movies an actor is known for. I'm not sure how much you agree, but it's all up to IMDb, and that is the source I used.

Nice job. Tougher than it looks. Can't believe Midnight Cowboy didn't make it for Voight or Hoffman.
May 11th, 2011 at 01:29 GMT
For anyone frustrated by the correct answers: Can't speak for the quizmaster, but this is likely based on the movies that got the most votes for each actor on IMDB. So it's a sample of the general, Internet-using (much younger skewing) population, not a sample of people who really know these actors, their work, or cinema in general.
May 11th, 2011 at 01:42 GMT
@Sharpdale, I have an app for IMDb on my phone that tells me four movies that any specific actor is known for, but generally, you're absolutely right, it's usually whichever movies that have the most votes for a particular actor.

This is a good quiz, with a crap source, which is good because it means there will be debate down here in comment land. Give us a sequel at some point.

No Graduate for Dustin Hoffman? Wow.
May 11th, 2011 at 16:46 GMT
Great quiz idea with interesting results. Seeing Hook for Dustin Hoffman made me laugh. Really, IMDB? Hook over The Graduate? Sure it was Spielberg, but really?
May 12th, 2011 at 04:10 GMT
Not the quiz maker's fault but ugh. I'd like to take some of those kids to the movies.
May 12th, 2011 at 09:24 GMT
Its amazing that some of the movies the actors actually won Oscars for (eg Nicholson - one flew over the cuckoos nest, Olivier - Hamlet) don't feature.
May 12th, 2011 at 20:43 GMT
No "Midnight Cowboy"for Jon Voight? Isn't that mathematically impossible?
May 12th, 2011 at 21:33 GMT
Shocked none of the Toy Story movies made it for Tom Hanks.
May 13th, 2011 at 05:52 GMT
I'm more surprised at Castaway not on there for Hanks. Woody was the character in Toy Story, not Hanks himself. Didn't even know Voight was in Heat and I've seen that movie multiple times.
May 14th, 2011 at 00:14 GMT
Who could ever forget Jon Voight's performance in "Transformers?" It was no "Coming Home," but then again, Michael Bay is always getting snubbed by the Oscars.... :/ These bizarre results make for a maddenly enjoyable Sporcle quiz.

moon over say, se7en for kevin spacey was the strangest as the latter has almost 5 times as many votes. i guess it's because spacey isn't one of the main credits, though that was mostly just to surprise the audience

@FearTheManatee, thanks for making this and its sister quiz an editor's pick!
May 16th, 2011 at 04:12 GMT
No One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? The movie he actually won an Academy Award for? You sh*tting me?
May 16th, 2011 at 04:28 GMT
: Considering the high acclaim given to the four films that
selected for Nicholson (and I'll note he also got an Oscar for the 1997 film), this may be less a "ratings snub" and more a case of "there are simply a lot of popular Jack Nicholson films".
May 16th, 2011 at 15:45 GMT
I can't believe nobody has complained that Gene Hackman is not listed with "Hoosiers". I honestly couldn't think straight enough to remember him in anything else after I realized that wasn't one of the answers.
May 16th, 2011 at 17:01 GMT
A really cool quiz where the ones you get right are as surprising as the ones you get wrong. Well done.
May 16th, 2011 at 18:11 GMT
lord of war for nicholas cage surprised me. I only vaguely remember that movie title existing; it seems like he has a lot more known movies. Leaving las vegas, con air, etc. And man on fire for denzel? Strange, but makes for a fun quiz.
May 16th, 2011 at 18:18 GMT
I really like the idea of the quiz, but I think IMDB is full of it. Green Mile AND Da Vinci Code for Tom Hanks??? Not even close
Comment below threshold:
May 17th, 2011 at 00:38 GMT
Da Vinci Code for Tom Hanks? More like the Toy Story Trilogy. On another note could you have picked a worse list of actors?
May 17th, 2011 at 03:28 GMT
Great to see Moon there for Kevin Spacey although I'm not really sure if it best represents him as an actor since he was just a voice. Unbelievable movie though. Would really like to see a sequel with some more less known actors, that would be interesting.
May 18th, 2011 at 06:16 GMT
kevin spacey is keyser soze!!!!!!! and it was not there and hard to believe that 'in the name of the father' was not one of DDL's
May 19th, 2011 at 02:43 GMT
This is dumb; how come the Oscar winning/nominated performances aren't on here??? Rush, Bridges, Hanks, to name a few. This is stupid.
May 20th, 2011 at 09:38 GMT
Just did a my own little search on IMDB an Cuckoo's has more rates/votes than The Shining and waaay more than As Good As it Gets.
May 22nd, 2011 at 17:39 GMT
really the movie choices are terrible....and nearly everything is from 2000's +......great idea for the quiz....but dig deeper than the four movies imdb puts up, because they are aimed for the younger kids. OH and they missed tom hanks' best performance as well as denzel's in Philadelphia... I means seriously Da vinci code was good but has no place on this list......Neither does Tron: Legacy, over Tron.
May 22nd, 2011 at 17:42 GMT
Oh and Leaving Las Vegas for Nick Cage....um he won for that roll hello. And true grit for bridges, but not the man who won the oscar for it...this is a joke IMDB
May 27th, 2011 at 01:37 GMT
The earliest movie for William Hurt is from 1998? I don't think I can even think of any movies he's been in since then.
Jul 7th, 2011 at 22:30 GMT
No Mr Smith Goes to Washington for James Stewart? That was one of the most iconic film rolls in movie history. Stupid IMDb.
Sep 22nd, 2011 at 14:16 GMT
I would really like to know what algorithm IMDb uses because there is some f**ked up sh*t on here! Fun quiz though.

I'm not commenting on the quality of Bridget Jones' Diary, but (embarrassingly) I guessed it for Colin Firth.
