What about Marty (1955)?

I was at first a bit surprised by the lack of movies such as Notting Hill and Love Actually, but then I looked up AFI and found out that it was the American Film Institute, not British!

Let's start the "What movie is missing" discussion. I'll vote Lady and the Tramp.

@Lovenkrands: That's listed under the Top 50 Animated Movies at the same site, so it hasn't missed out.

So many movies could have been here that are under other genres: Titanic, Grease, Strictly Ballroom, The Princess Bride, Dirty Dancing etc,etc

silver_lining "I was at first a bit surprised by the lack of movies such as Notting Hill and Love Actually, but then I looked up AFI and found out that it was the American Film Institute, not British!" But Bridget Jones Diary does make the list. It's hard to define what is a British film & what is an American film with a majority of British cast and crew!

"Bull Durham" as a romantic comedy? What an injustice.

Geez, folks, go rent City Lights. It's the best movie made in the first fifty years of movies, and 80% of you don't even seem to be aware of it.

I hate to get in on the general grumbling on omissions, but they couldn't find a way to get Lost in Translation on this list?

I got everything made since 1979 (when I was 6) and pretty much nothing from before. I like old movies, too. Just haven't seen too many old romantic comedies, I guess.

Most romantic comedies are neither funny nor romantic. Worse genre ever.

It's strange how many of these movies, very good though they are, actually end pretty sadly.

@mutford - quite possibly, but these 50 films represent rather less than 50% of all those that have ever been made.

Fay Bainter might have had a fairly major role in Woman of the Year, but she wasn't featured. That has to be Tracy or Hepburn.

I don't consider My Best Friend's Wedding to be a romantic comedy at all! I agree that there are plenty of other movies that should have been on the list.

What about "You've Got Mail" (I know it was based on "The Shop Around the Corner") and "The Sure Thing"? C'mon people! I'd also add "Serendipity".

Roman Holiday is so wonderful that every time I see it on TV, I'm startled to rediscover that it was black and white. In my memory, it's forever in color.

I know it's been said already, but why would you make a quiz and only include one person in the romantic couple?? A "featured" actor or actress just doesn't make sense for this context.

I normally love AFI's lists but I just can't agree with this one. City Lights #1? Seriously? I'd give it a place on the list but no way it's #1. For my money, #1 is Roman Holiday and #2 is When Harry Met Sally. And maybe "romantic" is stretching it a bit, but I'd put Some Like It Hot on this list as well.
