I have never heard of #6

Very fun quiz! I didn't do so hot even though I know most NHL penalties...guess I'm too busy yelling at the refs to pay attention to their signals. I guess there are no signals for fighting, game misconducts and too many men penalties?

There is a signal for misconduct that I found while researching. It's both hand on the hips. I chose not to add it since it is a class of penalty (like minor and major) rather than a penalty itself. I didn't find any signals for fighting or too many men. I've never seen the officials give a signal for them. They just skate over to the time keeper and tell them the call.

An original idea for a quiz. Great!

I gave this quiz a 5 simply because of the expression on the referees faces, and in particular referee number 13.

The only one I had a problem with was 6 and 13.. 6 looked like hooking is all. Fun quiz

Fun little quiz, nice job. My only suggestion would be to accept "high stick", "slash", "trip" etc, without the "-ing" at the end.

Looks like instructions for doing a really strange dance.

It's so nice to know that I don't have to watch Kerry Fraser actually make any of these calls anymore.

@sevorak: The signal for too many men is to extend the index finger and then move the forearm in a circular motion.

got all but spearing. it's so rarely called!

Great quiz!! Got them all, but 6 and 11 gave me some trouble. Also, no diving?
Apr 21st, 2010 at 20:22 GMT
you are missing hitting from behind (like cross checking's signal but with palms open) though it is rarely called as well. It usually just goes as boarding.

I believe the official call for diving is Unsportsmanlike Conduct Diving, which has the same signal.

VEC is right, i saw too many men called tonight, and i thought it looked like a home run call in baseball, never saw or noticed it before so there's my odd coincidence for the day. Does anybody know the signals for playing with a broken stick or playing with two sticks?

Also isn't Bill McCreary's mustache a thing of beauty?

apparently, I don't know how to spell "Kneeing." I'd love to know what I actually typed in now. lol

Wow this quiz got a ton of plays all of a sudden. @VEC: Yeah, I saw that signal in several games of these too-many-men heavy playoffs. Unfortunately, the NHLOA doesn't have a graphic for it on their site, and I think the pictures of the actual refs make the quiz much more fun than stick figures. Same with hitting from behind Polandice.

@Saulmeister: Good idea, I've made that change with the exceptions of boarding and roughing. My logic was that I'd accept the penalty without -ing if you would commonly hear an announcer say, "He got called for a (penalty)." For example, you might hear Randy Hahn say, "Steve Ott is in the penalty box for a cross check on Dan Boyle," but it would be weird to hear, "Chris Pronger is in the penalty box for a rough on Ryan Clowe." If this is confusing I will change it.

theres also delay of game penalty

I'm only showing pictures of penalties demonstrated on the NHL Officials Association website indicated as the source. Butt-ending and delay of game are not included there.
