| @newenglander: I was just thinking of wealthy, northern countries, with relatively small populations and Luxembourg came to mind. The source link is working now and so I see that Luxembourg would have come in at #22 with a 79.18 life expectancy. So I just missed it by this much ;-) I looked it up and as you say Luxembourg is pretty high on the list for amount of alcohol consumed. I've heard it said that people who drink outlive those who don't, but I'm sure all sorts of factors need to be considered including quantity, whether it's done on binges or in moderation, even what you drink, etc. I can appreciate Luxembourg's geographical position though: French wines to the south, Belgian beer to the west, German beer to the north. They're sandwiched between the beer and wine belts; it's got to be a tough place to be a teetotaler. |
