| That has to be one of the weirdest statistical hiccups ever, and for some reason I was never aware of it until Etheridge2 just pointed it out. Eddie Murray actually led the entire major leagues in batting averages, and yet didn't win a batting title, as Willie McGee's NL-only average of .335 topped Murray, while McGee's overall average of .324 wasn't even in the top 5. Apparently Willie had trouble adjusting to AL pitching after spending 9 seasons with the Cardinals, as he only hit .274 in 29 games after being traded to Oakland. Also, McGee's 1989 batting average of .236 has got to be the lowest ever for a player the season before he won a batting title. |
