imo this should be split by league. NL starters generally have lower ERAs than AL starters.

You are missing Darryl Kile (RIP) for 2001, he had an ERA of 3.09 so Buehrle shouldn't be on there.

I remembered Rick Ankiel used to pitch...I just forgot that he used to be good at it. (Well, in 2000, at least.)

@sox_fan - fixed the darryl kile absence. espn.com's stats of 2001 didn't have him in there for whatever reason, but he's in the proper place now on the quiz and buehrle's out. thanks for pointing that out.

Rick Ankiel completely floored me, I didn't even know he was in the majors in 2000, much less among the league leaders. Phenomenal idea for a baseball quiz, definitely worthy of publishing.

Fantasy provides a helping hand on these, except when Burkett is the answer.

People forget that Ankiel was actually a good pitcher with a curveball scouts considered HOF caliber and almost won rookie of the year as a pitcher. He was great before he suddenly lost controll in the playoffs. Something mentally went wrong; might have been his father getting locked up.

@PerryAhn - Totally agreed. This would work better with a top 5 AL and NL each year. The DH changes the quality of lineups faced by pitchers. It is like comparing apples and oranges. Ok well maybe not, lets then say granny smith and golden delicious apples. Both can be good, they are just different.

Surprising as Ankiel was... it's probably Wakefield that was the biggest shocker to me. He must have really had the ol' knuckler working that year.

Why did you use 160 IP as the minimum? MLB uses 162 IP (1 IP per team game) as the minimum to qualify for the leaders. I don't know if any of these guys finished between 160 and 162, but it seems an odd choice to make.

I wonder how many the Phillies will have next year? Hamels will be facing other teams' #4? Yeesh.

@Jerry Garcia: How exactly will facing the other team's #4 starter effect Hamels' ERA?

I never forget how good Ankiel was before he imploded, but I am a diehard Cardinals fan, so I'm pretty biased. I'm surprised I missed guys like Cain and Mussina, yet somehow could get Pavano and Russ "Strikezone?" Ortiz. Good quiz either way.
