i am confused as to why someone without a history of really any success like robinson cano is even in this when someone who has been great for the past 5 years like jose reyes isnt even on this list

@notJQ, it's because he listed Rodriguez as being tied with Beltre because he thought one would be among the best 32 players this year and the other would not, but had a very difficult time deciding which one to choose.

I'm surprised that someone that finished the top 3 in the triple crown categories (Miguel Cabrera) would not be higher than 14...

Brian McCann? Ryan Zimmerman? Zack Greinke? This list must be a joke.

Anyone arguing with the list should read the article. Your lives would be enriched by a little more Poz.

Why wouldn't you call this the top 32 players and list Rodriguez and Beltre separately? I don't care how SI listed it.

I understand this is someone's opinion/guess and its not supposed to be perfect, but damn...its pretty flawed. Clearly all of these players are good, but there's no point in ordering them. Chase Utley is NOT better and never will be better than Tim Lincecum, Miguel Cabrera, Cliff Lee, or almost any of the people behind him on this list. Chase Utley is a ****ing douche.

Chase Utley's peak WAR (8.1) is only 0.1 lower than Linecum's peak (8.2), 1.9 higher than Cabreras (6.2), and 1 higher than Cliff Lee (7.1). Just because you dislike him doesn't mean he isn't a great player.

5 globes because it's Posnanski's list. I agree with what the others have said about him. That said, his top 32 lists always have poor/middling ratings on here because so many people unfortunately don't read him.

No McCutchen? Just because he is on such a horendous team doesn't mean he shouldn't get the attention he deserves.

This sucks! Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Morneau, Brian Wilson, Mariano Rivera, Josh Johnson, Delmon Young, Dustin Pedroia, Ichiro!, Adam Wainwright wre left out and deserve the top 30, none of these even make sense!!!! way to pick favorites!!!

Posnanski's reasoning on #27 is just plain stupid. There simply is no logic behind tying the two together. If A-Rod has a big year, Beltre can't be on the list? How does that make any sense?

@liechtenstein Adam wainwright obviously doesn't deserve to be on this list, he's kind of out for the year

@leichtenstein: Adam Wainwright is out for the year... he had tommy john surgery, so probably wouldnt fit on this list. Also, Delmon Young isn't that good... thats like wanting Nick Markakis on this list.

This list is such a joke, how he doesnt have mariano rivera in the list at all is shocking, the guy has been baseball's best and most consistent closer for over a decade. Also no ichiro? no jeter? and where does he get off saying A-rod is showing his old age because he hasnt played 154 games since 2007 (coincidentally the next spring he had a hip INJURY that he has been rehabing ever since and this season is back to being healthy) when he includes Youkilis who has NEVER played 154 games in his career (102 last season). And seriously choo, mccann and posey? really?

@sehh No guy who pitches 60-70 innings a year deserves to be on a list of the top 32 players in baseball (in regards to Mo.) Also interesting that you say A-Rod is showing his old age when Jeter was entirely mediocre last year. And Choo, McCann and Posey are all terrific players (as is Ichiro, who Pos mentions is right on the cusp.)

considering Carlos Gonzalez was pretty much the best all around player last year, there's no reason he shouldn't be AT LEAST in the top 10, but you could make a case for top 5.

@yellowmellojello so no relief pitcher is good enough to be in the top 32 players in baseball? not even if he has had an ERA under 2 for the past 3 years and has over that time averaged 39 saves? And there is no indication of him slowing down either. Even if he only pitches 60-70 innings, he impacts more games than any starter. Also it's not like i don't think mccann choo and posey are great players but do they really deserve to be put ahead of players like mariano rivera?

people cant understand the difference between real life worth and fasntasy worth anymore .. this list deffinately weighs defense heavily in the rankings as you see some of the better fielders at their position bumped up from where theyd be in fantasy (Agon, Mauer, Youk, Zimmerman, Choo) .. i do like this list except i really cant find any reason for why carlos gonzalez doesnt make the list
