The absence of the Vatican Museums (not only from the quiz, but even from the source list, which has 100 museums) is puzzling, especially since the Tesoro di San Pietro, likewise in the Vatican, is included. Surely the Vatican Museums must get over a million visitors a year?

Hmm. Wikipedia says yes. Makes me wonder if they didn't participate in the survey, or if there's another subtle point I'm missing. (That said, I pretty much had to pick one source for this, and Art Magazine's been doing the survey for a while.)

Yeah, wasn't a criticism of the quiz, which is excellent. Just weird. I'd have thought the Vatican Museums would almost certainly be up in the top ten.

Oh - why does the Whitney get a bonus answer, but other museums with more annual visitors (Philadelphia Museum of Art, e.g.) do not?

Very nice quiz. I would suggest accepting more simplified names as alternatives, as I failed with both "Pompidou" and "Orsay", but maybe I'm being too lazy.

@johnlk: I put in a number of bonus answers, and my main criterion was that they were another museum in a city that was already listed. So the Whitney's in there because New York is a hint, but the Philadelphia Museum of Art isn't because Philadelphia isn't mentioned otherwise. (I did put in the Seattle Art Museum because of local pride. ) @AlexRandom: Pompidou should work -- I tested that -- but while I put in d'orsay I didn't do Orsay. But I'll add it now. I tried to find as many alternative names as I could for each of these, but I'm sure I missed some.

@LTH: I wasn't sure, but most of the other art quizzes that have been featured seem to show up under History, which is what decided me.

Hold up! The British Museum isn't an art gallery - it's a museum. The Doge's Palace in Venice isn't an art gallery either!

@Squiffy: The quiz says "museums or art galleries," so I'm not sure where your objection comes from.

I like that London has so many museums listed; it's probably since they are all free. I don't even know how some of them track attendance, like the Saatchi Gallery.

Almost noone calls the Art Institute of Chicago by its full name. And the most easily recognized art museum in Indianapolis is the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

I guess regarding the results that Musée du Louvre compared to the others is also freakin' famous for a museum, especially since it isn't located in the Us.

I will say the Children's Museum in Indianapolis while a great museum is not an art museum by any stretch of the imagination. Dinosaur bones, water tables, etc.

"Met" is acceptable for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, yet "Guggenheim" and "National Gallery" aren't acceptable for their resepective facilities? Hmm...

Great idea for a quiz; I enjoyed recalling all the places. One puzzler was the Tate; I kept typing different spellings, unaware that it was two separate museums.

@scarequotes: It doesn't say "museums and art galleries", it says "art museums and galleries"; while all those listed as answers do contain some works of art, several are much better known for antiquities - I would never consider the British Museum, V&A or Pergamon, for example, as primarily "art museums or galleries". Also, could "Museo Reina Sofia" be allowed please?

I missed four that I've been to… *headdesk* Lovely quiz, though I agree with several commenters' reservations that not all of these would normally be thought of as "art museums or galleries".

More visitors in Amsterdam attend the Van Gogh than the Rijksmuseum? Hard to believe. And museums in Indianapolis and Houston get more visitors than the sensational Philadelphia Museum of Art (cue the Theme from Rocky), which doesn't even make this list?

@ChileNoseJam: Right. But Squiffy's comment seems like he thinks this quiz calls the British Museum an art gallery, which it doesn't. And the whole reason for using an art journal for the source is so I can let experts define and crunch numbers as they see fit. Also, now that this is published I can't edit acceptable answers. I tried to be liberal in my alternate names, but wouldn't mind if an admin added more.

Reiterating @CitizenSnips's comment ... this is that fantastic kind of quiz that makes you feel actual shame for doing so poorly, only to check the stats and find out that you did quite well. I'll definitely be retaking this quiz to improve my numbers and self esteem. Great job, @scarequotes!

Technically speaking, Antiquities can be classed as Objects d'arte. Certainly most of the British Museum's displays are sculptures, paintings, woodworks, ceramics, metalwork, architectural items and mosaics, which can be easily classed as art. As a sidenote, if anyone's ever in Paris, I recommend the Musee Rodin, a rather pleasant musuem with most of Rodin's works situated near Les Invalides.

@daHOOK: Everyone in Chicago does just refer to the Art Institute of Chicago as "The Art Institute," but since there are probably mulitple Art Institutes in the world, we must be specific. And that is it's real name.

@expat: "Accademia delle belle Arte" didn't turn up as an alternate name for that museum when I searched, but I'm fine with an admin adding it. "Met" should work; it has for me. "Tate" isn't specific enough, because there are two Tates with different visitor counts. ("National Portrait Gallery" gets you both London and DC, though, if that's any consolation.) Sorry you didn't love the quiz.

I live in London and I love the fact that museums and art galleries have free entrance. It encourages everyone to visit and appreciate the exhibits and the large number of times London appears on the list is a testament to this.

A wonderful quiz. I was disappointed to only get 14 and then astonished to find that this placed me in the top 5%. I then counted up how many of the museums and galleries I have visited - 15! Spelling problems, or failing to get the precise names seems to be a problem.
