Just thought I'd tell you that imdb.com says A Room With a View was released in 1985. Maybe you should specify that these are American release dates?

@jacquesjd3: It's a tough one, because that 1985 date is a Royal Command Performance. All other release dates, including the UK, were in 1986 (US: March 7, UK: April 11), and it was up for the Oscars covering that year. So I suspect most people think of it as coming out in 1986, since that's when the public could go.

Regarding your bonus answer for Dashiell Hammett, the original "Maltese Falcon" (1931, 10 years before Huston) was directed by Roy Del Ruth.

@rockgolf: Yes. I opted to mention the most famous adaptation in cases with multiples, rather than earliest. And not to mention adaptations with different titles, i.e. Satan Met a Lady.

Great work - This quiz definitely called for the bonus answers. How else would I be able to guess the wrong Stephen King movie 11 times and not get frustrated?

Has Nick Hornby written any books that weren't made into movies? High Fidelity, About A Boy, Fever Pitch, etc. Only a matter of time until someone buys the rights to Juliet, Naked.

Tricky with the 'nearly right' answers coming up as bonuses. Seems something wrong with Umberto Eco and Dan Brown sharing space, albeit on Sporcle...

I'm glad this isn't a betting game because I woulda gone all in on "The Birds"... Thanks for the bonus answers! I got 10 bonus and only 19 real. 10 + 19 = 29/30...woot! lol

Who else got the Agatha Christie one without activating any bonuses about it first? I think that title must be the most popular Poirot title in Sporcle.

Somehow this became "How many works by these famous authors can you name?" Must have taken forever to compile all those bonuses

How could you include Twilight and not Harry Potter? That is an abomination. It would be one thing to include all classics and not have Harry Potter, but to include that tweenage book and not the most popular book series of all time? It's just not right.

Why does this quiz go back to the 1800's? It needs to be modernized.

@maaxwell: A Room with a View was commercially released everywhere in 1986 and qualified that year's Oscars. It had a Royal Premiere in Dec. '85, but I went with the UK/US release year.

Red Dragon was also adapted in a film by director Michael Mann; when I guessed Red Dragon for the Thomas Harris novel, and it told me I was incorrect, because it was directed by Brett Ratner, this could also reference Michael Mann.

Great quiz. I loved the bonus answers (and turned this quiz into the subsidiary game of "How many Stephen King adaptations can I name that weren't directed by Cronenberg?") libpanda >> It's true that Michael Mann directed an adaptation of Red Dragon, but unlike the rest of these, it did not keep the title. Mann's adaptation was called Manhunter. Ratner's version did keep the title.
