@scarequotes, the title for this quiz should read 'Adaptations' not 'Adaptions'

Thanks. I have no idea how I could've looked at that five or six times and never realized it was wrong ... but now it's right.

Good selection, made me think. Hit a lot of Roald Dahl bonus answers before I found the right one.

Wow, so many movies I did not know that were books adaptations, Especially Fight Club! And I forgot Jaws even though I read the book. Rrrr

@Flick (archived comments) - they changed the name (Willy Wonka, not Charlie) for the 1971 version, so it wouldn't count here.

Hmm, no love for Michael Crichton? The Andromeda Strain, The Great Train Robbery, Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Sphere, Rising Sun, Timeline, Congo, Disclosure.

There's nothing wrong with this quiz, but it's a little random. There have been hundreds of books adapted into films of the same title. Why stop at 30? And why these 30? There's nothing in particular that unifies these 30 as far as I can tell.

Why does there have to be a unifying theme? Trivia questions themselves are often somewhat random, with the only criteria for their selection being the likelihood a given population (i.e. those anticipated to take the trivia quiz) will know the answers or not know the answers.

Great quiz. The only improvement I can see is to capitalize the 'D' in 'McDonald.'

@moviegoer74: You say random, I say "deliberately cast a wide net." (Though one factor I used was IMDb's top-rated movies and filtering for movies based on books. So popularity of the film came into play.) And I figure I'll do at least one more quiz with this premise -- Crichton and Hinton fans, take heart.

@omnipotent1...there doesn't have to be a unifying theme. That's why I prefaced my post by saying there's nothing wrong with this quiz. But without one it's natural to wonder why The Maltese Falcon but not The Thin Man, or why The Grapes of Wrath but not East of Eden (for example). Because there are literally hundreds of film/novel combos that fit the quiz criteria some explanation of how these particular 30 were selected would be nice.

@moviegoer74: This is a good list of books adapted into films. In this list not only are the films very well known, but also for each clue either the director or author is a recognised name, making it somewhat easier to identify the answer. That's not the case for most books that are adapted into films, so for that reason alone I think this is a very good selection.

@moviegoer74: One criterion I forgot to mention: One mention of each author or director. So I picked Maltese Falcon as my one Hammett entry, primarily because the director is also famous. Same with Grapes of Wrath vs. East of Eden. So, overview of selection process: Popular movies based on well-known novels, one per author or director, with a deliberate attempt to be broad and not end up with, say, a list that was half SF or mystery or Stephen King. (Someone could do a really good SF-focused quiz, for example.)

@cthulhu: I triple-checked that one -- Gregory Mcdonald didn't cap the D in his name, it seems.

Little surprised that Night of the Hunter is second to last because, even though I had no idea it was from a novel, a bit of trivia that I have heard a few times is that it was the only film that Charles Laughton directed.

Thank you for including so many classic films in this quiz. Too often it seems that movie quizzes never include anything pre-1970, and even then it's just to include Casablanca. Bravo!

@Akd17: Wow. I've seen ACO referred to as a novel so often that I didn't realize it bordered on novella territory -- but there are plenty of references to it as one. Good catch, and sorry for the confusion. (If an admin wants to get rid of the mention of "novellas" in the description, I'd be in favor.)
