I have a hard time beliving AIDS, which was unknown thirty years ago, is one of the ten deadliest diseases in history when cancer did not make the list.

Cancer is a disease. What you mean is the top ten infectous diseases. However, it's possible that the top ten killers of all diseases ARE infectious. Only in modern times in developed countries did most people die of ailments that weren't infectious diseases.
