There aren't many words, so it's a short little quiz, but it's nice to see Wales' effect on English, which is small, but it's there.

Oddly, "dad" is listed on that Wikipedia page as a word that does not, in fact, come from Welsh. Neither "onion" nor "cotton" is on that page, and Merriam-Webster, at least, suggests that they're from Middle French and Middle English, respectively. Why include those three?

I'll take out the onion and cotton, but dad is definitely from Welsh. it sure as hell isn't from the german Vater, the french père or the latin Pater, especially when you consider Tad mutates to Dad sometimes.

Dad everywhere just comes from Indo-european. German vater is quite obviously linked to English dad. Why would the modern English be a borrowing from Welsh when it could just as easily have developed from Anglo-saxon? It's not as if dads were a concept unfamiliar to the English before coming into contact with us britons. Coombe seems like a rather obvious one to add to the quiz too.

i don't see how the german vater is "obviously" linked to the english dad. the german vater is obviously linked to the english word father, but father and dad are not the same word. they are synonymous, but they must both have etymological origins.
