| Whether or not it's scary, "NOTLD" is groundbreaking. Romero was the first to meld the concept of a ghoul with that of a zombie. Before "NOTLD," zombies did not crave human flesh or effectively transform humans into other zombies. Note, for example, 1932's "White Zombie" and 1943's "I Walked With A Zombie." I've also heard NOTLD called an allegory for the Vietnam War, which is interesting, I suppose. The final scene could say a lot about the civil rights movement as well. 1968 was simply a fantastic year for horror, anyways, with "NOTLD," "Rosemary's Baby," "Vargtimmen," and I'd include "Targets" as well. Sci-Fi had "2001" and "Planet of the Apes" that year too! |
