Wow, is the Dodgers pitching staff really that bad?

No, Kershaw, Billingsley and Kuroda are actually very good. I don't know why Torre isn't starting one of the three. Maybe he doesn't believe in his young pitchers (Kershaw, Billingsley) so he's giving it to the crazy guy instead.

@BigSnax: only gays use the word 'rubbish.' @uchusky and Blaise: Actually Torre wanted to alleviate some of the pressure that has been placed on Kershaw by taking him off the opening day list. Billingsley is very good as well but you gotta understand that this is the Pirates they are playing. Lots of leeway for deciding pitchers.

@jg: how? what were they supposed to do? They were either going to let Halladay walk in Free Agency and get nothing for him OR trade him and get some nice prospects. He wasn't going to re-sign in that hell-hole. Just remember your comment when you're wondering where Brett Wallace and Kyle Drabek came from.

I think the Padilla thing was so that Kershaw or Billingsley can start the home opener (not just me; I've seen several writers say the same thing). The "Pirates aren't very good" theory helps explain it, too.

@bigsnax: god doesn't need the hyphen where the O goes, it's not a bad word. and baseball is only America's national pastime, so deal with it @jg: that's a really ignorant thing to say. like they WANTED to screw themselves with pitching. down the line, marcum, romero, and drabek could make the best 1-2-3 in all of baseball, so yes, there pitching will probably be a weakness for them this year, but it will be a strength for them down the line

Marcum and Drabek could be good, but Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez are going to make the best 1-2-3 in the next few years until Jamie Moyer-Kyle Kendrick-Antonio Bastardo develop into the best 1-2-3 in the history of baseball

I always, for some reason, get Ian Snell and Zach Duke confused, and so I keep think Duke is with the Mariners.

I wouldn't have even guessed Sheets on the quiz "list of pitchers who are still being paid to throw a baseball."

I heard a little bit ago that somehow the rotation got messed up in spring training, causing Padilla to have to start opening day. I don't know the legitimacy of that though.

Wow, I'm clearly not ready for baseball season yet. I guessed Sheets and Millwood for the wrong teams, and I've never even heard of either pitcher in the Toronto/Texas matchup. Some of these pitchers are brutal. Could you even contend with an entire rotation of Padilla, Duke, Lannan, Westbrook, and Sheets?

Wishing now that I hadn't looked at the paper this morning (or watched the Yankees/Red Sox game last night) and already seen all these pitching matchups!

The Royals' opening day lineup is just depressing. Scott Podsednik, Chris Getz, Yuniesky Betancourt and Jason Kendall don't really strike fear into the hearts of AL opponents. Greinke will need to be on his "A" game today.

Wrong pitchers for Boston and Yankees. They started Easter Sunday with Okajima and Park. Get you facts straight

jbraun- Easter Sunday WAS opening day for those teams, so they were the Opening Day starters. The Yankees and Red Sox don't play today.

Vincente Padilla vs. Zach Duke: Now there's a marquee matchup for you! Verlander/Greinke is probably the best pitching matchup of the day.

@deej - Do you really mean to tell me that if you had the Yankees (or Phillies or whoever you like) lineup and then that starting rotation, you think you would have a legit playoff team? I sure don't.
