Interesting predictions. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close seems to be the film dropping out of everyone's lists after the panning it's had from critics. It'd be good to see Drive get a get a best picture nomination the hype just might be enough.

The screenplay for Beginners is definitely one of the top ten front runners for Best Original Screenplay.

Interesting. Karger is usually pretty spot on. The only major surprise is him not including Brad Pitt in supporting for The Tree of Life, which I've seen TONS of people predicting. And there are some weird choices at the bottoms of his lists (Dench? Broadbent? Just because of BAFTA?). I'm really feeling a Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close surprise somewhere, but I'm not sure where. Von Sydow is definitely a possibility. Bullock's actually quite good too.

OK, The list has now been revised to have just the actual nominees. If you tried to pay while I was updating you will get some wacko results. My apologies.
As to the nominations: No Albert Brooks? Spielberg snubbed for Best Director? Only 2 nominees for Best Song???? Two left-field nominees for Animated Picture but no nod to Cars 2? No love for Ryan Gosling?

Odds that at least one dress at the red carpet ceremony will be described as "extremely loud and incredibly close": 5:4

You should have waited for the technical nominations instead of rushing out to make a half-assed quiz.

There's a really good quiz with all the categories at
- I gave it 5 Orbs. But this quiz is intended for people not fascinated by the technical categories.

AWESOME to see Gary Oldman finally get a nomination after so many memorable performances, but I don't think he will win. My predictions: Actor- Pitt; Actress- Close; Supporting Actor- von Sydow; Supporting Actress- Chastain; Director- Malick or Scorsese (REALLY close); Picture- The Artist. Also want to see Woody Allen win for original screenplay, and Sorkin/Zaillian for adapted screenplay.

Thanks for the quiz. I have a question, though: why are all the answers in alphabetical except Best Adapted Screenplay? I spaced on the last one in that category, and there was no help from looking at the other answers. It doesn't have to be organized that way, but, since the answers in all the other categories are organized that way, it just seems strange.

I think it's a shame Kirsten Dunst was so shunned from all the nominations for Melancholia, but I assume that's to do with Lars Von Trier at Cannes... Also disappointed that Tilda Swinton wasn't nominated for We Need To Talk About Kevin. It's dark but she's immensely good.

Best Animated Feature is definitely not a major category. It shouldn't even be a category, because I don't want to live in a world where Puss In Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2 are Oscar nominated movies and Melancholia, Young Adult, and 50/50 are not. It's on the level of Best Documentary and Best Foreign Language Film, only I can understand why those are categories. I think Best Animated Film is just a way to bring in younger viewers who will tune in to see if their favorite movie wins.

I'm saddened to see such a low percentage for Margin Call, one of my favorite movies of the year. Also, who else knew the director of The Artist, but couldn't spell it?

By the way, it looks like this quiz will push me over 10,000,000 plays on my published quizzes. If each quiz was played for an average of two minutes, that's the equivalent of 38 years! Man, that is one scary amount of time to be responsible for wasting!

Having ELaIC over Drive is a goddamn travesty.
Feb 26th, 2012 at 06:11 GMT
Wow. What a weak year for animated pictures.
Feb 26th, 2012 at 06:41 GMT
The only annoyance for me this year is the Drive snub. Also, would like to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy up for best picture. The Artist will probably sweep the major categories. If anything this could be a bigger sweep than The King's Speech last year. I'm confident it will take best actor, director, picture and original screenplay. With that will come editing, probably score, and a couple of others. I'm predicting the Artist takes 9 in total.
Feb 26th, 2012 at 06:51 GMT
The Artist will probably take 5 home, maybe 6. Doubt it will get Cinematography, Art Direction, or Costume Design (though the latter is most likely of those three). Also it will lose writing to Midnight in Paris.

Pixar has set the bar too high with their past movies. Cars 2 wasn't thaaat bad that it shouldn't be with these other animated feature nominees...

It's getting me excited for the Oscars tonight

Interesting that of the original screenplays, one is silent and another needed to be translated for most of the voters to understand it, so subtitles played a big role this year.

I saw both Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2 and neither deserves to be nominated for anything. :-P
Feb 27th, 2012 at 01:14 GMT
I disagree about Rango. I went into it expecting a kids film and was thrilled with it. A wonderful pastiche of western, sci-fi & comedy. Yes, children can enjoy it at one level, but adults can recognize that the canyon run is almost a shot-for-shot tribute to the attack on the Death Star in Star Wars.

Extremely and incredibly close and loud, not necessarily in that order.
Feb 27th, 2012 at 06:34 GMT
I hadn't noticed before, but these are the 2011 Nominations. The year when referencing the Oscars should always be for the film year the awards are for, not the year in which they are given out.
Feb 27th, 2012 at 12:53 GMT
It's always been confusing, but these are the 2012 nominations for 2011 films. Besides, 2011 is

@rockgolf...regarding your comments on the nominees way back when...I didn't see it, but every review I saw, literally every one, was in agreement that Cars 2 was the worst film Pixar has ever made.
@admin...Eric Roberts is a strange choice for the front page joke, considering that he actually is an Academy Award nominee. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1985 for Runaway Train.
