I'll be honest. Many of these do not exactly fall into the category of surprises in any definition I'm aware of. Ellen is gay? Of two briefcases left, one had the higher amount? Really?
What's the most surprising plot or event you've seen on a TV series? Frankly, I
For me, the revelation that what we thought was a flashback on LOST was actually a flash-forward at the end of season three.

I don't know why Nip/Tuck didn't work for #22. I think it's their motto;} Fun quiz. Oh...maybe capitalize ER.

Kimberly blowing up Melrose Place should have made the list, IMO.

i watched this last night but still missed 2. i was sure that guy from csi getting shot in his car would be on here.

My favorites from the list, which were legitmately jaw-dropping-what-the-hell-just-happened surprises at the time, are M*A*S*H, E.R., and L.A. Law.
Jun 17th, 2010 at 18:17 GMT
Pretty weird list, but that's not your fault. Disappointingly is spelled wrong, by the way.

This is exactly the sort of thing that shouldn't be determined by a survey, even if it's just done for a television special. Some of these are just people listing their favorite moments, or things they thought were funny - like Clinton playing the saxophone, or especially the I Love Lucy grape-stomping. And things like Ellen coming out (which everyone knew was coming for months), and the first appearance of Archie Bunker might have been groundbreaking and memorable, but they hardly count as shocking - especially when compared to Bobby turning up alive on Dallas, or Blake being revealed as dead on MASH. Some moments that might not have been great TV, but were shocking as hell, would be: "Is this because I'm a lesbian?" on Law and Order, Roseanne revealing that a lot of the details of the show - including Dan surviving the heart attack - were all imaginary, and news anchor Christine Chubbuck committing suicide on the air.

@Fidelio: I agree. Could there be anyone over the age of six who was surprised that the Lucy in grape bit ended with her falling down? Or that a 50/50 call (Idol or Millionaire) ended up one way over the other? As for non-fiction, does anything (sadly) come close to the second plane hitting the WTC live on TV?
Jun 17th, 2010 at 21:35 GMT
How is number 30 a surprise? Adam winning would be the surprise.
Jun 17th, 2010 at 23:17 GMT
Yeah, a lot of these moments don't seem "surprising" to me. When I think of shows that throw lots of surprises the viewers' way, I think "24" and "Lost," neither of which made the list. Fun quiz, though!

Sigh, thinking about The Wire still upsets me. Omar comin'... :(
Jun 18th, 2010 at 08:21 GMT
I'm surprised Dr. Kutner's suicide on House isn't mentioned.
Jun 18th, 2010 at 13:22 GMT
@BigTruck: It was mentioned as a runner-up. Apparently more people were shocked at by Lucy stomping grapes.
Jun 18th, 2010 at 23:15 GMT
A great example of a shocking moment that was great television - but sadly will probably never be seen on a list like this - is from Sports Night (the Aaron Sorkin drama, not the actual sports news show). The moment I’m talking about is when Peter Krause's character says the line, "You're wearing my shirt, Gordon." If you’ve never seen the show, that line might sound like one of the least shocking moments imaginable. But in context, it was easily one of the biggest "WHAT the %@*% did he just say?" moments ever - and handled perfectly by everyone involved.

Dr Kutner's suicide was mentioned on this TV Special but wasn't in the top 30.
Jun 19th, 2010 at 19:34 GMT
Good quiz, but that list is terrible. No St. Elsewhere? Or what about "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" This would have been so much better if they would have stuck to scripted TV.
Jun 19th, 2010 at 23:53 GMT
What could possibly surprise anyone about #23? That was the entire premise of the show! The entire country knew about it weeks before the first episode aired.
Jun 22nd, 2010 at 23:22 GMT
Michael running over Meredith in the Office? Seriously? That beats every single twist on Lost?
Jun 29th, 2011 at 02:47 GMT
Kimberly pulling off her wig to reveal her scarred head on Melrose Place. And the NCIS one in the quiz.
Jul 11th, 2012 at 19:22 GMT
...and what about: Fallon being kidnapped by aliens on The Colbys? Gary's death in Thirtysomething? The Moldavian Wedding & Massacre on Dynasty? They were also amazing TV moments! Fun quiz though.
