What's a "newspaper"? OK, Deflect my poor score with humor. Just couldn't remember many, but when I saw the results, wow, so many I should have remembered. Liked it though, and thanks for the extra steering in the instructions, that did help.

Wow, can't believe FoxTrot isn't in 500 newspapers. People are missing out...and Calvin and Hobbes reruns...

I'm not a comics person, but this gets 5 globes for me for being an interesting quiz and well executed. Having said that, you need to update your note: you're using that third column instead of the * to denote >1000 paper comics.

I miss the Far Side.

I never did figure out that Andy Capp..

Instead of the column where it lists either >500 or >1000 (which I personally didn't find too helpful), it might have been nice to use that column for the year that the comic debuted. That would help you know if the ones you're missing are older or more recent.

Here is a complete list of worthwhile comic strips created in the last 30 years: Calvin and Hobbes and the Far Side. It's an injustice of society that those two comics ended in their prime, while crap like Marmaduke, Family Circus, Blondie, Hi and Lois, Wizard of Id, Hagar the Horrible, etc. etc. etc., continues on. Those comics haven't been funny in decades, if ever.

@Den: Actually, Far Side debuted in 1980, so it doesn't qualify. Good new(er) strips? Bizarro, Retail, Pirahna Club, Zits, possible Retail.
Feb 4th, 2012 at 19:08 GMT
@Den: I don't think "injustice of society" and "comic strips" can ever belong in the same sentence...

Mutts is the worst on this list.
Feb 4th, 2012 at 20:24 GMT
My paper doesn't include even half of these.
Feb 4th, 2012 at 21:40 GMT
@den: Those two stand out as the best precisely because they ended in their prime. The others all pale in comparison because they outlived their relevance. When Blondie came out it was a bigger hit than the Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes combined. Old things getting old is hardly and injustice.

I only read a few of the comics on this list. Most of them are just dumb. I miss the Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, and Foxtrot (I know Foxtrot still has Sunday strips, but it's not the same). I wonder when any decent new comic strips will come out? It looks like I am stuck with webcomics until then. Too bad.

@Gwynn19: That's a great idea! I've made the amendment.

Tundra is a favorite among annoying co-workers who never shut up about Alaska and pin the strips all around their workspace and feel the need to explain all the jokes to you when you don't laugh. This may just be my experience though.

Oh, Ziggy. Will you ever win?

This was a really interesting quiz, because it made me dredge my memory for the comics that actually get printed in papers these days. The creative energy of the art form has moved almost entirely to webcomics... a comparison between this list and the top 30 webcomics would be very interesting.

Really thought Pooch Cafe had more circulation. It's one of the few other than Calvin & Hobbes that I actually like.

I miss Bloom County. My family does watch their Christmas special every year, though. It never gets old!

How about Bizarro or Drabble? They have daily runs in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at least. I don't know about how common they are elsewhere.

There were about a dozen that I've never seen or heard of. Good quiz though!
