If you enjoyed this, I have a follow-up set for tonight: The 77 unique two-letter combinations in American State names. Look for "
wesT Virginia is the only State with TV" tomorrow.

: Very sneaky quiz, for those of us who have memorized the states in alphabetical order. The last 5 states are all in this quiz.

I feel dumb. The one state I missed was the state I'm "in" (forgive the pun).

@Caramba: True, but it seems entirely coincidental. BTW, the "in" combination is the most popular, followed by "NE" in no small part due to "New" states.

@caramba: Exactly... I was getting nervous as I came to the end of my little song i sing.

Ah... I forgot that the addition of 'West' does not take away the 'in'.

Yes, once I realised they were mostly hiding near the end of the alphabet to fool me, I changed tactics and finished easily!

I got them all, except Illinois, (and I thought it would be too easy.)

I totally failed to realize this was a minefield until the quiz blew up in my face. Time to try again...

Nice use of the minefield format. Too many quizmakers seem to think its only purpose is to inflate their play counts. I'd like to see more Geography quizzes like this.

@strags11 - I agree but the one I missed is really bugging me! I can't think what it is.

That was fun. I thought it would be pretty easy, but, by the end, I found myself almost spelling state names out loud--let me tell you, people give you some funny looks when you do that.

Sporcle, do you have an annual 'golden globes' award ceremony? If so could I nominate myself for fail of the year? I got North Carolina in the first 10 seconds and just realised I didn't get South Carolina. Sometimes my own stupidity even impresses myself...

Glad you're enjoying this. I've just added a similar "IN"-countries minefield follow-up to the Contributed Games section. You can "beta-test" it at

I think its odd that indiana is #1 and illinois is dead last. The first thing I thught of when doing this quiz was all the 'i' states: indiana, illinis, iowa, and idaho. Just thought both the 'i' states whould of been closer together in people guessing them right.

Minefield is pointless... how can players guess a state if they don't already know how to spell it?

@thewildboo your brain must work the same as mine. I had the exact same thing, except I scrolled through the comments until I saw the one I missed...and your comment was the first one to mention it!

@cardiaccats and @IamNotReaI, it's not that 26% of people put the wrong answer first, it's that 26% of people put a wrong answer and hit a mine, if you try you'll see that if you put a wrong answer it changes "so far so good" to whichever wrong answer you put. It couldn't have been your reason because then 95% couldn't have gotten Indiana
