As stated in the Archived comments, the one franchise that should legitimately be on the list but isn't is the "Dirty Harry" series. http://boxofficemojo.com/franchises/ has a list of over 100 "franchises" and I clicked on every darn one to see the average box office adjusted for inflation. Harry outgrossed (as an example) Spy Kids, and based on RottenTomatoes.com, also on average did better critically. Therefore by The Atlantic's standards, it should have been on the list, so I added it as an extra.
The Alien franchise is close and could very shortly get back on the list because (SPOILER ALERT upside down below)

Why isn't Alien in already? Because Alien vs Predator 2 was so bad and so poorly attended, it brought down the average of the whole franchise. |
