Fun quiz, i didn't know a lot of these, but it was still fun.
Oct 28th, 2012 at 04:17 GMT
I think I had to have owned a van, had a beard and worn Earth Shoes in the '70s to do well on this. Wait..but I did.

It's weird how just the slightest elements can make these logos so much more recognizable. The Pink Floyd simulacrum was at about 3% until I added the light blue "brick" lines behind the logo. Oasis wasn't recognized at all until I added the white box around the letters. Any other little changes that might make these more recognizable?
Oct 29th, 2012 at 19:53 GMT
Awesome quiz. Was hoping for Judas Priest..
Oct 29th, 2012 at 20:32 GMT
There's about a dozen versions of JP's logo. (See for more info than you'd ever need. Unfortunately, the most famous logo doesn't suit the letters "Sporcle".
Oct 30th, 2012 at 15:38 GMT
Any other suggestions?
Oct 30th, 2012 at 17:14 GMT
How about the Allman Brothers Band or the Grateful Dead - both have pretty iconic fonts
Oct 30th, 2012 at 18:52 GMT
I tried Springsteen for top right, as it's the identical font used on "Darkness on the Edge of Town".
Oct 30th, 2012 at 21:28 GMT
@Barnztorme: Indeed they are. Both based on old manual typewriters.

Okay, I've made the Cheap Trick logo more unique and replaced The Cure with a new entry.
Nov 2nd, 2012 at 06:59 GMT
Great quiz! Only missed Cheap Trick and Whitesnake. I would suggest you use either of the better known 'Snake logos instead or change it to something else. I've got all their albums and couldn't work it out...

I kept typing Korn for Slipknot! :)

Loved the quiz and thinking of suggestions of sequel. There's that Cooper Black typeface for the Beach Boys and that unforgettable Sex Pistols logo...
Nov 2nd, 2012 at 19:51 GMT
The Beach Boys font is a bit generic, but love the Pistols idea. I'll substitute two of the poorer answers with that and another font this evening.

Okay, three lowest were replaced. Let's see how the new kids do.

The Doors was too easy. They are my favorite of all of those, my second of all bands. I got all on the left column, and only three on the right. I recognized Def Leppard but just couldn't place it.

As a bit of personal bias I'd love to see Rush on here
Nov 6th, 2012 at 14:30 GMT
@happydays: Which one? This page list about 30 Rush-inspired fonts.
Nov 6th, 2012 at 23:19 GMT
I usually see the first one, that seems to be there common one. But the one above the "roll the bones" types is pretty recognizable
Nov 8th, 2012 at 00:23 GMT
@HappyDays: Done. A second Canadian band added for balance, too.
Nov 11th, 2012 at 04:47 GMT
Amazing quiz. If you're taking suggestions, how about Alice Cooper? He has a pretty recognizable logo with the running paint on the two o's. Also The Who (the one with the arrow on the o), The Clash (their logo has lots of cracks in it) and Metallica (with the specially stylized M and A). Yes has a pretty nifty logo too, but I'm not sure how many would get them.
Nov 11th, 2012 at 13:13 GMT
@nscox: All reasonable suggestions, but problematic for different reasons. Metallica's only really distinguish fact is the jagged first and last letters, but a) they don't really look good on "S" and "E", and b) I couldn't find a font that pointed the last letter in the opposite direction. I tried a "Yes" font but that balloon effect so graceful in Roger Dean's design doesn't work on most letters and in most orders. My best attempt was not recognized as being very "Yes"-like. The Clash logo you refer to is only available as an EPS file, which I can't use. The Who is only distinguishable by the one letter "O" and while that's in Sporcle, it's not much to go on. Alice Cooper would be good, but I can't find a downloadable font.
Nov 12th, 2012 at 14:17 GMT
Well, that was challenging. I took the actual Alice Cooper & Clash logos and rebuilt them letter, sometimes one stroke at a time, to form the letters in "Sporcle".

i fail...i thought def leppard was metallica
Nov 17th, 2012 at 05:44 GMT
imaginative and quirky.
Nov 17th, 2012 at 06:32 GMT
Wow, this is kinda like those quizzes where the word blue is colored green and you're supposed to say/type "blue" - the fonts look so familiar, but I couldn't name a lot of them!
Nov 17th, 2012 at 08:36 GMT
It was a pretty big fault putting Nickelback between these bands, they're just not the same level...
Nov 17th, 2012 at 09:10 GMT
Nov 17th, 2012 at 10:22 GMT
Did anyone else want to keep typing Sporcle as answer?
Nov 17th, 2012 at 11:47 GMT
I'm rather impressed by the amount of people who got Rush, since that logo was from their oft-ignored debut album...
Nov 17th, 2012 at 11:52 GMT
Expected it to be all metal bands when I clicked the link, but was pleasantly surprised. I don't normally comment, but this was a really good quiz, and very tough.

I thought Nickleback's logo was a steaming turd. Oh, wait, that's their musical catalog.
Comment below threshold:
Nov 17th, 2012 at 13:36 GMT
not sure how/why anyone would care or know what "fonts" these groups have on their albums. I collect tons of music, but wouldn't have a clue. i got about a third of these just by guessing random bands
Nov 17th, 2012 at 13:43 GMT
@mrmanheim: But I'll bet you never look at an album cover the same way again. Assuming, y'know, there'll be album covers to look at.
Nov 17th, 2012 at 14:01 GMT
imaginative and fun. you missed out not having Metallica's 80s logo in here though
Nov 17th, 2012 at 14:09 GMT
@wkr6469: It wasn't for lack of trying. I just couldn't get the S & E to look anything like the angular M & A at each end of Metallica. Same problem with the classic Yes logo. Looks awesome for the letters y-e-s, but unreadable for any other combination of letters.
Nov 17th, 2012 at 14:23 GMT
It's obvious a lot of love and work went into the crafting of these. Well done.
Nov 17th, 2012 at 14:51 GMT
@ktappe: What, this ole thing? I slapped it together in 5 minutes.
(Actually, several logos took close to an hour each to get just right. So, thanks.
