Based on the Travelers' Century Club (TCC) list of "countries" GEOGRAPHICALLY, POLITICALLY OR ETHNOLOGICALLY REMOVED from their parent countries.
The TCC has a list of "countries", a total of 321 as of July 2011, that determine eligibility for membership. TCC members must have visited at least 100 of 321 "countries" on this list. All but 4 countries on the Sporcle Countries of the World list are also on the full TCC list. Two of those COTW countries (UK & UAE) are broken into their geographic or political components for this quiz, and the others are countries that span two continents, and therefore listed twice in this quiz.

	Credit where credit is due: I would never have heard of the Travelers' Century Club, if it were not for Ken Jennings. If you've played his recent front page Made-Originally-for-Sporcle quiz on Geographic Look-alikes, then you probably saw that Ken has a new book out called "Mapheads". (Does #30 on the Amazon best-seller list qualify as a Best Seller? I'd say so!) In association with that book, Ken wrote a great article at Slate, in which mentions the TCC, so here's a link to that article: http://www.slate.com/id/2304342/ - If you like it, and want to read more by Ken, then buy Mapheads.

	Alternates you should accept: Transnistria, Azores, Northern Cyprus, Somaliland, Bali/Timor as individual answers, Sint Maarten (or really, just take St. Martin for both).

	Great quiz Rockgolf! I too recently found out about the TCC. It's definitely nice using their standards for qualifying as a "country". Certainly pads up the personal list haha

	A strange list indeed...the individual emirates count as countries, but subdivisions of other countries usually don't? And PEI over Newfoundland? European and Asian Russia are different? Oh well. One suggestion is to accept "Andaman and Nicobar", it doesn't seem to work that way.

	Darn it, thought I'd kept spelling Andaman wrong and also tried Nicobar, but stupidly didn't think to try Andaman-Nicobar. And tried Dutch Antilles but didn't think of Netherlands Antilles. Great quiz.

	@Matt & @Adam: I guess that PEI has basically the same status as Hawaii in their mind. Independent secondary level of government and seperation from the rest of the country. Newfoundland, which might have a stronger argument also includes Labrador on the mainland. I cannot defend the Nagarno Karabakh exclusion, you'll have to take it up with the TCC.

@peczek: Again this is just my thinking, but I'd equate Kurdistan with Quebec in Canada for the purposes of this quiz: distinct cultural identity, active significant separation movement, but not recognized by it's own country as independent.

	This is really a nice idea, and I can understand the fact of splitting up countries. Although I can't understand splitting up the UAE, but since that's stated in the description it doesn't matter for the quiz. 5 globes. One thing, it didn't accept St. Barthelemy.

	@Sesel: Thank you so much! I took the quiz spellings directly from the TCC's country list. (You'd think if they'd been there, they'd at least know how to spell it correctly!) But all your suggestions seem more common. So in many cases, I've made them, not the TCC spelling the displayed version. In particular, the spelling of the Spice Islands originally displayed seems to exist only on the TCC website. All: Please let me know if there are any other variations or more common spellings for these locations. I for one welcome our new Maphead overlords.

	PEI & Nfld explained: The TCC website has an explanation of why PEI is listed by Newfoundland is not. See http://www.travelerscenturyclub.org/country_status.html - I can't say I agree with the rules, but at least they're consistent.

	Really enjoyed this quiz. Suggestion: Accept "Northern Mariana Islands" and "Northern Mariana" without the "s" (the official US territory doesn't have an "s" on it). Well done!

	There are a number of ways to spell Umm al-Qaiwain, I always used Umm al-Quwain. I think it's the most commonly used version

	@A_is_for_Addict: I've set this up now as Umm al Qiwain / Umm Al Qaiwain / Umm al-Quwain / Umm al-Qawain / Umm al-Qaywayn / Umm el-Qiwain / Umm al-Qiwain / Umm al-Qaiwain. Anymore more complex and I'll just accept "Umm".

	Bismarck (with a C) is the spelling I've almost always seen. How about East Irian, East New Guinea or East Papua as alternates for Irian Jaya? And North Cyprus for Northern Cyprus? Just suggestions... Of all the Canadian islands, I never thought of trying the smallest. Baffin, Labrador, Newfoundland (after all Newfoundland & Labrador were separate from the Dominion of Canada until 1949), but P.E.I.? Not to mention variants on Northern Territories, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. For that matter, P.E.I. and not Tierra del Fuego. (Maybe the Travelers' Century Club has an Anne of Green Gables faction.)

	Odd that if Abkhazia and Nakhichevan are TCC countries, that South Ossetia (and for that matter, Chechnya) aren't.

	I tried "South Sandwich", "South Sandwich Islands", and "South Georgia" before I happened to get the Falkland Islands Dependencies by typing "British". Seems like those others should be accepted.

	Irian Jaya has also been called West Irian. Stamp albums use the spelling Fujeira.
