It's amusing to see some of the combinations that aren't accepted, such as "shot in the head".

I'm delighted that this quiz is taking off, but a lot of the credit has to go to Luke Bradford, who has a couple of similar quizzes. The "source" atop this quiz is to his original. Please try it.
Wait, let me be more specific. Luke has a whole pile of great quizzes and
all
of them are worth playing:

the phrase 'long in the tooth' comes from the idea that people's gums recede as they get older. gruesome, right?

There's a *Hole in the Bucket*, dear Liza, dear Liza. There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole. Wikipedia has it as either "There's a Hole in My Bucket" or "There's a Hole in the Bucket." Great quiz, by the way.

I thought "nip it in the bud" is the common saying, not "nip in the bud". I also thought there was absolutely no reason to make us type in "in the", or "in" rather than just fill in the blanks with the 2 words.

@tats: Nope, it comes from the fact that horses teeth continue to grow. They also wear down, but you can still tell their age by looking at their teeth. If it came from people it would make more sense to say short in the tooth, as our teeth don't grow and grind down.

I don't think you should cut on the time. I took 2+ min to understand exactly what I had to do. (Initially, I just thought you had to complete
each one
of them.) I actually think 9-10 min should be ideal. But then again, some people want less time, so you should probably just leave it as it is. Also, way to tempt Alice In Chains fans into trying "man in the box" and "down in the hole" [sic].

'Theater in the round' is when the audience is seated in a circle around the actors. The 'dog in the manger' refers to a Greek fable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dog_in_the_Manger

An Aesop's fable. A dog is wtanding on top of the cattle feed that is in the manger. The dog can't eat it, can't use it, but will not let the cattle eat. The dog in the manger's expression is "It doesn't do me any good, but I won't let YOU have it."
