Enter a most populous state in the box below
Correctly named most populous states will show up below

This is a test of the "Hide next clue" format. I think the format has possibilities, like selecting from a narrow list. Let me know what you think.

I agree that the new format has possibilities and that this quiz showcases it better than the one on the front page, but I really don't think that this is ideal for any existing quiz besides those "game show"-type quizzes that previously relied on bonus answers. I have no doubt that people will come up with great new ideas for this format (I'm racking my brain!) but I think it's useless to apply it to something like the Baby thing or this(I'm aware that this one is only a test).

I agree completely that it doesn't work on the "Baby" quiz, but it's a new quiz tool, and you can blame a hammer for not being a screwdriver. You just have to find the right use for the tool.

This is a better use of the new format.

Good use of the new format. For a 5/5 rating, would like to see another minute added.

@Roentgen: Hmmm, if "shave off" time to make a quiz shorter, what's the opposite? Using plugs? Anyhoooo, as requested, moved up to 3 mins.

This is definitely a good use of the new format. The only thing I don't like about the new format even in a quiz like this that's appropriate for it, is the fact that you can't see the answers in the results even when you are done. Of course, that's nothing against you or this quiz, Rockgolf. That's just the nature of this format. But seeing the results was one of my favorite things about the sporcle quizzes. I had an opportunity to learn things, and many times I have been surprised with answers. And of course, I've had plenty of "Oh yeah, of course" moments. But we don't get that little bit of fun in this format. But it was a good quiz.

What's with the Hidden Clue format?
Ahhh, I was wondering when you were going to ask.
Yesterday, Sporcle, besides passing the
200 million games played
milestone, introduced a new way of setting up puzzles. On the Game Info page, there's a new checkbox: "Answer in order and hide next clue". They used the front page "
Million Dollar Baby
" quiz to try the new format out and asked for opinions. The results were nearly unanimous thumbs down.
The Edsel was more popular.
New Coke was more popular.
Leno at 10 was more popular.
The "hidden clues" format was neck-and-neck with H1N1 when asked which you'd rather have.
And for that kind of quiz, the people were right. Because once you hit a question for a phrase containing "baby" that you never heard of, GAME OVER.
But I'm a tinkerer. I thought there must be some way that a puzzle like this could work. I came up with some ideas, and this is the first.
I hope my game inspires you Sporclers to be creative and come up with better ideas that will work best with and only with the "hide next clue" feature. Ideally, a "hide next clue" game requires a set of questions where the next clue depends at least partially on the previous answer. Perhaps a word chain...
So put on your thinking caps, fellow Sporclers, and come up with a better idea!

rockgolf - you are so funny! I still think I would prefer this as a "forced order" quiz in the vein of the "order in which the states entered the union" quiz. Certainly better than a cold pork sandwich served on a dirty ashtray.

Noble effort, but it still doesn't work for me, in part because most of these states have such similar population numbers. I'd much rather have the flexibility to type in "Ohio" into several different slots, until it pops up. I didn't like having to type in a bunch of states roughly the same size as Ohio, until I hit upon the right one and could move on.

I like this... I even more like the hiding-the-answers-once-finished. So that when you view the most guessed, you can't see the ones you didn't get. That'll really bug you when you can see you've only missed the one that is most guessed! :D

I think it's a shame that the answers stay hidden even when you click 'give up', because for me Sporcle has also been a great place to learn new stuff. With this type of quizzes that apect is unfortunately lost :(

Strongly agree with Josh and prefab - how can I learn anything if I never find out the answers? That's a big part of the fun. Also prefer to be able to continue if I am stuck on one particular answer.

I like not seeing the answers when time is up, so I can try it again with just one more clue revealed. This is a great format for a quiz like this. The only suggestion I would have is change it from population to electoral votes. That is a more meaningful metric for most people (or at least one they are more likely to know).

There are some kinds of quizzes for which this format works well. This isn't one of them. The point of a quiz like this should be learning, and this format makes learning more difficult.

This format has possibilities and I found it fits in this particular quiz just fine. Would it be possible to make it optional (meaning that the individual quiz taker can turn the function off if he/she so chooses)?

@percy: You can still type in random states. It just may take longer to get a right answer. :)
