This is a sequel to the "
Countries Of the World - 50th Anniversary Edition
" quiz, that I've moved to the History category. So if you're looking for sovereign states, try there.
As you will see, the quiz is organized by the administrative authority, and within that sorted by formal name. However, I've put in well over 100 alternative less formal names. If there are any missing, please let me know.

By the way, while the quiz is titled "50 years ago", I'm actually using the date Jan 1, 1959. Hence the inclusion of two certain American territories that changed status during the year.

I like the fact that it doesn't accept new names like Benin and Tanzania, which makes this quiz a thinker instead of a "type in as many countries" quiz. However, I tried "Haute Volta" (knew it by the French name), "Malagasy" and "Panama Zone", and do we really need to type Guiana that way? It's such a small change. Also Belarus should be considered, because I don't think there is a straight-forward alternative.

What about Greenland?

Also, what about Berlin, which was technically not part of either German state?

@Onno: I do allow "Panama Canal" for "Panama Canal Zone" and "Byelorussia", which was the informal name at the time. "Malagas" is already an alternative so that should cover "Malagasy". I don't want to add endonyms like "Haute Volta", but if there's an outcry, I will.
@johnlk: Greenland wasn't listed on the source. I don't know why.

@johnlk: Berlin was listed on the source as under international control. Specifically West Berlin: Occupied territory governed by France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was just too long for a Sporcle clue.

Very good quiz. While we're being formal, Wikipedia is internally contradictory (surprise) about whether the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was a Crown Colony or a federation under the Crown. The source page says "Crown Colony" but the CAF page explicitly says it was not a colony.

I tried Central Africa and Ubangi-Shari for CAR but it didn't take. (Neither did the Sporcle-standard "CAR"). I believe teh Sudanese Republic and Senegal comprised the Federation of Mali, so duplication there. Also question the absence of Greenland. Stamp collecting will get you a high score here.

Also missing the British Virgin Islands

I really liked this! Somehow managed to hit 77. One suggestion: Belarus for Byelorussian S.S.R.? Couldn't think of Saint Helena to save my life, and never would've thought of the West Indies Federation, though god knows it would have saved me a lot of time! I think I typed every island in the Caribbean. :) Great work!

This quiz, in my opinion, needs a lot of work, but in some ways it could never be perfect or please everyone. It hasn't decided how integrated a place has to be not to count (Jersey but not Greenland, for example), and seems very muddled by French départements d'outre-mer. And Algeria wasn't independent until 1962, a glaring omission. It should accept Goa, Damao and/or Diu.

There's some problems with double counting here. The Mali Federation was a federation which consisted of Senegal and the Sudanese Republic. Spanish Guinea was comprised of Fernando Po and Rio Muni.

Algeria wasn't listed possibly because France considered it an integral part of France, not a colony, and it had deputies in the parliament, so it wasn't technically non-sovereign. Possibly the same case with Greenland.
