Great game. Haven't thought of old Doug Drabek in a while.

All but one of these teams made the playoffs ('62 Dodgers finished 1 game behind the 103-62 Giants), but only four--'57 Braves, '60 Pirates, '61 Yankees and '80 Phillies--won the World Series.

Adding the 1986 Red Sox (Clemens) and 1992 A's (Eckersley) as bonus answers as they both won the MVP and Cy would be cool.

Yeah, definitely add teams where the pitcher also won the MVP. It qualifies as an answer, not even a bonus one. There's also the Dodgers in 56, the Dodgers in 63, the Tigers and Cardinals in 68, the A's in 71, the Brewers in 81, and the Tigers in 84 in addition to two named above. Love the quiz by the way.

I specifically left out MVP pitchers as a player can not be his own teammate so it really wouldn't make any sense. I don't think bonus answers are possible with this format anyway. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hernandez, eckersley, Fingers, Mcclain and Blue would be good additions, maybe with a little sidenote.

To answer Sporcle's question on the home page, I think they make the players around them play better. Of these 18 teams, all of them made the post season (except for the '62 Dodgers who lost 3-game playoff series to the Giants after ending the season tied for first place), 11 teams made it to the World Series, and 5 teams won the World Series.

Got 29 out of 36...I love baseball history and missed only three before 1991 (I'm only 30 years old). Missed both 1960 Pirates -- the team was inferior to their WS opponents (Yankees) on paper, were outscored 2-to-1 in seven games, and Bill Mazeroski is the face of that team because of his Series-clinching homer.

Couldn't come up with any 1960s Red Sox pitchers other than Luis Tiant -- when I saw the answer, I was disappointed in myself, since ????????'s picture was hung on the bar on Cheers, where it was said to be Sam in his playing days. (Sam's fictional uniform number was also the same as the real-life pitcher.)

I think the fact that awards (particularly the MVP) almost always go to a player on a playoff team barring an otherwordly season from someone outside the postseason accounts for the fact that they almost all made the postseason more than anything.

Dear Sporcle: Thank you for giving me a reason to say the sentence "I always forget about Pete Vukovich in times like this!". I cannot fathom any way this would have happened without you.

shouldn't this count players like eckersley or clemens or koufax or newhouser or gibson or blue etc. who won both? it would make it more confusing even though i guess you can't technically be ur own teammate.

30 of 36. Fortunately I didn't miss any that had me slapping myself when I found out, saying "how did I miss that?" Pete Vuckovich is not slap-worthy. Sorry, Pete.

Should include Milwaukee 1981.....Fingers as the MVP AND Cy Young winner? I know the notes say no pitchers as MVP, but how many have that daily double?
