	The reconstruction senators were appointed by the North. No way the citizens would elect them then or now.

	Both Revels and Bruce were elected to the Senate by the Mississippi state legislature, just like every other Senator. Mississippi, at the time, had a Black majority. All the North was doing at the time was insuring that white people weren't using intimidation to prevent Blacks from exercising their rights.

	With the recent appointment of Tim Scott (R-SC) and William (Mo) Cowan (D-Mass., to be sworn in on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013), there will now be eight: 2 chosen by the Mississippi legislature (Hiram Revels & Blanche K. Bruce), 3 elected by the voters of Massachusetts and Illinois (Edward W. Brooke, Carol Moseley Braun and Barack H. Obama) and three appointed by the Governors of Illinois, South Carolina and Massachusetts (Roland Burris, Tim Scott and William Cowan).
