	These results, while accurate, are misleading. Most, if not all, of these states take the ACT. The vast majority of people who take the SAT in these states take both exams and are taking both usually to get into prestigious institutions. Therefore, the data sample is not only small, but not representative of the population at large. Accurate SAT results? Yes. Good way to judge "smartness"? No.

	I agree with the previous comment, that the majority of these listed states are predominantly ACT states. In addition, some states require 100% of graduating seniors to take the exam, while the percentage is usually between 50 and 70% for most states.

	we studied these results in my stat class a few years ago. it is almost a perfectly linear correlation between the percentage of students in a state taking the exam and the average scores. about 6% of illinois high school seniors take or have taken the SAT while Maine (the state with the lowest average SAT scores) requires every student to take it.

	If it's not intended to accurately represent intelligence, you should probably take the "top ten smartest states" part out of the title. As the others said, because all those states are strongly ACT-biased, those students that self-select into taking the SAT are more likely to be academically gifted. The converse was true at my East Coast public high school.
