| @ rer2121: I did a bit of reading up on the situation in South Africa. As far as I can tell the local governing bodies for cities in South Africa are called "metropolitan municipality". Most of these include the main city and its surrounding suburban areas and towns. Thus Johannesburg is part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Cape Town of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality and Durban of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. While these three metros have populations between 3.5 and 4.5 million, the major cities within them are much smaller. According to the last census (2001) Johannesburg has a population of just over 1 million, Soweto 860.000, Cape Town 830.000 and Durban 535.000. |
