Any comments welcome. Anyone have any input on whether or not this should be an "answer in order" quiz?

I'm a little bit surprised no insects are on there. They are, after all, used as food sources on many places in the world and 1,7 million isn't that much. After all, it would probably take quite a number of bugs for just one meal.

yeah I was a little surprised that there are no grubs or crickets on here but even more surprised that there's no seafood.

@cuendillar and crover: I don't really know. I assume that the list specifically excluded insects, because a plate full of crickets once a day for even one village would add up pretty quick...

The only thing I can think of for the fish answer is that they're counting species, and no individual species is killed/eaten more than any of these ones. To just have "fish" on there would be like having "birds" or "mammals" as an answer, which would make the list awfully short :-)

As an aside, if people wouldn't mind dropping a comment if you think there's something wrong with the quiz, rather than just giving it a lousy rating, then I'd be able to likely make it better and everyone would be happier!

to say fish would be like saying air breathing creatures. A'fish' is technically undefined. Its not a species or group with like mammals. and i suspect species of fish would beat all the numbers of the land animals in this quiz. I would just put 'excluding fish'. Great quiz though,i enjoyed it.oh and you just get people who give it a lousy rating out of lots of high ratings then dont say why. annoying as hell i know.

I like the quiz and everything, but I wondered, in what way is it a geography quiz? Also, you should mention in the instructions that the list is limited to birds and mammals. And I would accept buffalo.

I guess I can add a note that says something to clarify the "fish" situation. I don't necessarily think that it's "limited" to birds and mammals, I just think that we eat more specific species in those categories than any individual water-based foodstuff.

I was thinking about whether to put it in "science," "geography" or "miscellaneous" but decided on geography because it has to do with geographic-type things (worlwide statistics, trends in global populations, etc) which struck me as good enough reason to put it in geography...

@reepicheep: nice quiz; one thing that would improve it would be accepting more alternative answers: eg plurals (sometimes if one types fast, it doesn’t trigger for the singular on the way through), “hen(s)” for “chickens”, possibly just “buffalo” for “water buffalo”.
Re the fish issue: I’m pretty sure the numbers for some small food fishes would be large enough to figure here. It’s hard to find conclusive breakdowns by species, but for instance, as far as I can tell from this UN report http://tinyurl.com/5v7guop the catch of European Anchovy (a single species) in the Med and the Black Sea was at least half a million a year throughout the ’90’s and 2000’s — which would put the number of individuals well into the tens of millions, at least. So I’d guess that NG did limit their data to birds/mammals. But since that’s still a bit unclear, a note like “List includes only birds and mammals” would be accurate either way.

I would suggest reducing the time by at least 2 minutes. I had time to type in all of the common answers (cow, chicken, etc.) and stare blankly at the screen for 4 minutes

I got to think whitetail deer should surely be on that list, and beat out camels for sure. In Illinois alone we had over 180K harvested in our last season, and those were just the preliminary numbers.

No way is camel eaten more than say Herring or Tuna, my guess is this excluded fish and should state so, a lot of wasted time was spent on different fish species. And how did I miss Duck? I have one out my window right now (I guess I couldn't even consider EATING him?)

This list obviously excludes seafood even if separated by species. It only takes a few minutes of internet research to figure that out. In California alone, there were 40,000 metric tons of sardines harvested in 2009. The average sardine weighs 200 grams. That means California alone accounts for 200 million sardines. In Maine alone, fishermen harvested 75.6 million pounds of lobster in 2010. The biggest lobster are around 4 pounds. Assuming every lobster caught was 5 pounds, that's over 15 million lobster from Maine alone. My guess is that if you included seafood (even separated by individual species) the whole list would be various types of fish, crustaceans and mollusks.

I liked it. Surprised not to see fish... but I do understand the species thing. Like others have said, accept buffalo. I know they're different but it still would be a good alternative.

The herring is the most widely consumed fish in the world and I would venture to guess there are a lot more than herrings eaten than camels, water buffalo, etc...

Please accept "cattle" for cow and "swine" for pig. Cow refers only to female cattle, and a pig is a swine weighing less than 120 pounds (if it weighs more, it's a hog).

I just read this mini-article in NatGeo and it specifically mentions ants but it doesn't say how many are eaten per year just that there are "a thousand trillion to ten thousand trillion ants [on earth] at any one time... about a million ants for every [human]." Maybe you could throw this up as a bonus?

Here is a link that shows the actual food production and animal slaughter as of right now.

Click on the food tab and it shows all the animals/food products. I think that it is very interesting, and I thought that this would be a good place to share it.

Wow... Thanks for commenting/playing, everybody! I've made some changes, added a note about the no-fish thing (which is NG's call, and I'm not sure why). I've also added more alternatives, so hopefully that'll help. PLUS, I've knocked a minute off the time. I was thinking of making people choose which answer to pick, but thought that'd make it a bit too ambiguous, so just tightened up the timing a bit.

My guess is the "undisclosed reason" in the NG article for excluding fish and insects is that it is looking only at DOMESTICATED animals. That would also be why wild/hunted mammals are not on the list. For example, this web site gives the number of deer harvested by US state: http://www.southeasternoutdoors.com/outdoors/hunting/deer/deer-harvest-state.html. If you take the number of whitetail deer harvested in Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and North Carolina, you already have more deer than camel in the above list - and that is just five states. Whitetail deer are hunted and eaten throughout the US, Canada, Latin America and parts of Europe. It is a good quiz, but I think the source needs to be checked. Domestic animals makes sense but even excluding fish and insects there would seem to be other wild land animals that are eaten in greater number than camels.

Yeah, that's a good call, snorkle. If it was strictly looking at numbers for *livestock* rather than just animals in general, then that would explain why other things aren't included... I'll do some more digging RE: source.

Roughly 6 million White-tailed deer are hunted in annually in the U.S. (and maybe Canada). I also saw an unverified figure of 50 million Mourning Doves and 30 million squirrels. (Both deer and squirrel counts undoubtedly include more than one species). In any case, you should just rename the quiz "Top Ten Livestock Animals..."
