| $WAR was invented by High Heat Stats (an offshoot of Baseball-Reference) to determine the truly most valuable players. By taking the total WAR of all pitchers in 2011 (443) and the total salary of all pitchers (some huge number), and determining from those a conversion factor of $2.62M/WAR, we can get the WAR each pitcher should have produced. Then, subtract this from actual WAR to get "$WAR", the "extra" WAR that would be unexpected for that player's salary. Batters have their own conversion factor, as do all players in different seasons. |
