Anyone notice how most of those states are ones where there's not much else to do BUT drink?

I'm a bit disappointed that Minnesota didn't make this list. I'm a bit surprised Wisconsin was so low.

Too much time for the format, I was able to input pretty close to all 50 states in the time alotted. I did type Utah in hopes of uncovering a bonus - thanks!

I think New Hampshire is #1 for one reason: there is no tax on alcohol up there, so everyone from Massachusetts buys their beer up there when they are coming through.

@JLKeip. Agreed. I've got more than enough time to type in every state. Should be about a minute or two.

Not being American, it was basically a game of guess the states, but can I ask why Utah is so obviously wrong?

@hazzapee About four out of five people in Utah are Mormons, who are barred from consuming alcohol. If you want to learn about why most Mormons live in Utah, I suggest you look up a man named Brigham Young.

Seems like the more sparsely populated the state, the more beer guzzling per capita. And I was shocked to not see Washington in the list. It's practically micro-brew heaven up here. Oh... "micro" brew...

I'm assuming this is gallons per year per capita, though I didn't realize that at the beginning and I was just guessing the most populated states. That should be clarified.

Montana and the Dakotas? Wow, who knew. Had I only had 20 guesses, I would have gotten about 3 correct. Fortunately I had enough time to guess 48 states until I got them all.

fraac: I think folks guessed the states that attracted large numbers of German (& other Central European) immigrants in the 19th century...those folks loved them some brau. Though like others, I'm surprised Wisconsin (the classic example of just such a state) isn't higher on the list.

I'm surprised Alaska isn't on the list...long cold winters would definitely make me want to drink. Plus the population is small which seems to be a factor in this quiz.

Boston Matt: Montana has no sales tax on beer either and it is a state the same as New Hampshire except with a larger area and a smaller population but ethnically and socially it is very similar. The reason the Dakotas are so up there is tragic. Many Natives on reservations drink in levels which exceed the level of most Native and non-native drinkers. Poverty is the main reason as many counties in SD with a Native majority are along the poorest in the country.

Yeah, I was surprised about the Dakotas until I remembered about the number of people living on reservations there. On the other hand, a number of western states that didn't make the list - especially Arizona & New Mexico - also have a large number reservations, which makes me wonder if population isn't actually the more influential factor. Or maybe climate?....

@EssessNine97 Actually only about 60% of Utahns are Mormons. There are 14,131,467 Mormons, and 2,763,885 Utahns, so that means only about 12% of Mormons live in Utah.

Consumption can't really be measured ("hey, buddy, did you drink every drop in that bottle?" and so this is a purchasing pattern quiz, making low population/high tourism places like NV high, as well as low/no tax on alcohol states like NH and DE that are near big urban areas. The rest...? just a buncha stinkin' drunks... I was surprised more southern states weren't here but I guess I underestimated the influence of the bible belt.

A bit surprising that Missouri and Colorado -- home to Anhueser-Busch and Coors -- don't drink more beer. Of course, I'm a Missourian that leans more toward Boulevard Brewing Co. than the watered down A-B swill when I want to drink Missouri beer, but to each his own.

Too much time. Also, the only state that surprised me was New Mexico not being on the list. It has, I believe, by far the highest incidence of alcoholism in the country. Of course, maybe beer just doesn't do it for an alcoholic.
