Wouldn't San Antonio be bigger than Orlando?

Portland and Sacramento are larger metro areas than Orlando. San Antonio was larger in the 2000 census, but Orlando is likely to jump ahead in the new census.

I assume the quiz-maker was using Combined Statistical Areas, not Metropolitan Statistical Areas - the latter would result in Riverside-San Bernardino being the largest for the NBA and MLB, which would be a bit of a travesty.

corrected. I was probably thinking St. Louis there since they are the largest with MLB, NFL, NHL but no NBA. yes, the source is based on CSA (Combined Statistical Areas) rather than MSA. Source doesn't give the year though. (but I don't think it was the 2000 census)

Who would have thought that on the bonus answer? I didn't, and I grew up there...we had a team back then.

this would be a lot more interesting if it were a top 10 per sport. as it is, kinda boring

Blame Canada for bestowing a major issue in this quiz. Montreal has a larger metro area than Orlando (MLB) and Seattle (NBA). The MLB and NBA each have a Canadian team. You can specify for these to be U.S. cities only, but that seems like it would be giving Canada the cold shoulder for leagues in which teams exist in that country. On the other hand, it would trick people by including Canadian cities. What a conundrum.

Oh, and since you did not specify where in the world, technically, Tokyo should be the answer for all four.

Since it's based on CSAs, Dallas > Orlando (by roughly double).

@Sidewave212: Seattle > San Diego, and Orlando > San Antonio, according to Census Bureau 2009 estimates. This is true for both the CSA and the MSA rankings. @cgilmo20: The Dallas-Fort Worth CSA (and the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA) is home to the Texas Rangers, a Major League Baseball team in the West division of the American League.

@deej: maybe it could be top 2 or 3, once it gets past about 5 you get cities that have no team for two or three leagues, and cities that have no teams at all.

wow this is just bad. using pure population, and cities teams are associated with would be a much better idea. just another example of someone out thinking their way to a lousy quiz

Good quiz! Why isn't there a big sports team in Las Vegas? Sports is great entertainment and Vegas calls itself the entertainment capital of the world.

The usual argument against Las Vegas is that no one is "from" there - people move from other cities and already have favorite teams. That didn't stop Phoenix from getting teams though.

Also, San Antonio doesn't have a CSA. Doesn't qualify. Hence, I think that CSAs are the wrong way to do this. I recognize that it is tricky with the Giants/Jets being in E Rutherford, but the CSA model doesn't make sense for what this is trying to get at, I think.

Las Vegas has no major sport pro teams because it is the gambling capital of the USA. They like to keep the gamblers and the athletes as separate as they can, at least in appearance.

I find it hard to believe that Orlando is the largest metro without an MLB team - I would have never have guessed it. Maybe as others have already stated, CSA's aren't the best way to go. Also the quiz needs updating - Atlanta no longer has NHL.
