I'm really surprised that Canada wasn't on the list.

Why Nicaragua...of all the Central American countries?

@chriskotx: as usually the first TV channels in Latin America were state owned, I suppose that it had something to do with the wish of dictator Somoza to have one more means of propaganda (although I think the rest of Central American countries weren´t too much democratic at the time either).

@wtncffts: I agree. It seems that Canada just missed the cut though with their first television network beginning broadcasts in 1952.

Wasn't there any TV in Canada before '52? Or were they watching American TV stations until then?

It's an odd mix of countries! But it would seem the wish to spread propaganda seems to be one of the main things on which TV was founded. Very interesting quiz indeed! 5 globes.

The question should be "Can you name the countries first to have public television broadcasts?" (or something like that) instead of "any kind of television".

@joebobs: most likely you're right. I wasn't born then, but it seems to me that in 1951 the celebrities that most frequently appeared in the Argentine television weren't popular actors or singers, but Juan and Eva Perón.

Its an interesting indicator of the pecking order back in the day. Cuba, Argentina, and the Philippines were among the most developed countries in their regions at the time. Its just that the last 50 years, with the corruption and the dictatorships you all mention, have seen them slide down the totem pole.

Interesting. Very suprised Canada doesn't feature on the list. Im definetely suprised by the inclusion of Cuba and Argentina.

Great quiz but the question is wrong. The source says "This is a list of when the first publicly announced television broadcasts occurred in the mentioned countries." It is NOT "countries first to own any type of television." It's about television broadcasts, not television ownership. Please make a change to reflect this.

Cuba are still one of the most developed countries in the region, depending upon which statistics you use...

Interesting too how you can see the effect of WWII - before 1939, only the major powers and some other European countries have TV, but following the war it begins to spread. I'd love to see as a sequel to this, the latest countries to get TV, and are there countries that still don't?

Canada is on that source list in 1931...
