Sorry, I felt that it would be fairly obvious in itself because it included past years, but nonetheless I added it for the sake of clarity.

There is way too much time. I believe 4 minutes (if not less) should be enough to find these countries since most of them fit into every decade.

So the Soviet Union was not even in the top ten economic powers until 1990, a few years before it collapsed after years of decline? OR the UN data is fairly limited for these earlier periods which somewhat undermines the quiz

Yes, data pertaining to the Soviet Union's economy was notoriously inaccurate. I added a note to clarify.

Interesting to watch China steadily fall as the fallout of the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution take place, then appears again as Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms take place.

@Zephos: Exactly. And take a look at 1990. They drop completely off again, a result of the Tiananmen debacle and the tightening of the political reins in the late 1980s.

On the other hand, it's surprising that India was on that list right till the 90's, which curiously coincides with the reforms in the early 90's that liberalized the economy and opened it up, much like Deng Xiaoping's reforms! Why then the drop, I wonder. Perhaps we just didn't keep up.

Couldn't for the life of me figure out how an economy ranked #3 in the world in 1985 would suddenly drop out of the top 10. It seems damn near impossible. Then it clicked. CLICK!

I think it's completely fair to separate "Germany" and "West Germany" in this quiz. That said, it's worth pointing out that pre-unification West Germany and post-unification Germany are both the Federal Republic of Germany.

it took me until 15 seconds from the end to work out "West Germany". It is the same country, it just absorbed the DDR.

How is India not in the top 10 for 2010? I am not arguing with the quiz matching the source, but India is 4th in both the World Bank and IMF ratings.

@ilkmeister: You are confusing different data. India is much higher only if you adjust the figures to show Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) which is an illustration of what can actually be purchased using a country's GDP (much of it being internal). This is an entirely artificial measurement. The data used by the quiz shows real economy sizes. Where there is a significant distortion is in relation to fluctuations in exchange rates. For example since the beginning of the latest recession the UK has followed a policy of devaluation of Sterling to make its exports more competitive and this shows up in its economy shrinking relative to Germany, France and Italy; however, this is probably a temporary blip prior to the fall out which would follow the disintigration of the Euro.

The disclaimer gives you "Soviet Union" & "Germany". Why not change this to "Due to political limitations, some data is missing for some nations." ?

I got West Germany only because I thought it was a little weird that Germany didn't show up in the top 10 in any year prior to 1990, then suddenly jumped to a solid third for a couple decades
