Iran independent in 1979?? Just because there was a revolution doesn't make it a different country. I mean ****, you put Hungary as 1918 when it's had significant regime change at least four times since then including several revolutions.

@Zephos I "put" what the source used, and CIA World Factbook is widely used on Sporcle and accepted as reliable by the Sporcle admin and others.

T should definitely be Timor-Leste. Also Iran has been independent for hundreds of years -- it hasn't been colonized since, I think, the Abbasid caliphate.

The correct answer for I should be Israel (1948). Iran has been an independent unified nation since 625 BCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medes

I like how the letters that have very few, or only 1, country with that are the most popular, namely QOZKY.

@johnlk Indonesian independence from the Netherlands was declared on August 17, 1945, even though the Netherlands didn't accept Indonesia as independent until 1949. However, in 2005, the Netherlands retroactively accepted August 17, 1945 as the independence date of Indonesia.

Interesting that Montenegro split from Serbia two days before "Serbia" officially came into existence...was Serbia still calling itself "Yugoslavia" for those 48 hours?

Severian, the country had changed its name to "Serbia and Montenegro" sometime before Montenegro won independence. That makes for an even more awkward transition phase, though!

Ehm.. Latvia (4th May) declared independence after Lithuania (11th March), so Latvia is more recent.
