| Deej, the Northwest Territories was actually made up of four districs (Keewatin, Mackenzie, Ungava, and Franklin), and a number of others in the 19th century that became provinces (like Athabasca and Saskatchewan, and also the Yukon district was separated from it). They were all separately administered, so it was considered a whole bunch of territories, with an overall central government at Yellowknife. When Nunavut was created in 1999, the districts were abolished, but it's still called "Territories", just because that's what it was always called. |
