From Stanford.edu "Stanford University is one of the world's leading research and teaching institutions. It is located in Palo Alto, California."

@rpg328 Look at the contact information page on their website:
"Primary address: Stanford University 450 Serra Mall Stanford, CA 94305–2004"
@David1987 It's in Notre Dame, IN. That's also verified on their contact info page.
"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana 46556"

Notre Dame, Indiana, is an unincorporated municipality just north of South Bend. It has no municipal government and is designated a municipality only for census purposes. If you think that qualifies as a city, fine. But personally I would accept both Notre Dame and South Bend as answers.

@puckett86: most colleges, especially large ones like Stanford and Notre Dame, create their own postal addresses for obvious reasons. Stanford is not named because its located in Stanford, CA. The name of the "city" came after the university. Stanford is named after Leland Stanford. And no one associated with Notre Dame would ever say it isn't in South Bend.

@ChrisVonDerAhe I think you make a good point about the definition of a city so I'm adding Stanford and Notre Dame. I've also added a note about unincorporated areas.

i'm also confused about Rutgers - you even say its a state college of New Jersey. New Jersey is in Rutgers name at all? Or am I missing the point of the quiz?

@tbidness Rutgers is a nickname for State College of New Jersey. I realize no one calls it that, but I am using official names for the quiz.

I think leaving out Rutgers is a mistake. Rutgers is Rutgers. No sports fan has ever called it anything else. It's never been referred to as anything else on any broadcast (except maybe as a joke) or on any page about the team. Hardly anyone nationally knows it's actually the state college of NJ.

@TannerPW3 I understand what you're getting at, but official is official. If we didn't use official names for quizzes, Sporcle would be too subjective to be enjoyable. "Sports fans" don't determine official names. By the way, I made a mistake in my previous comment; it's State University (not college) of New Jersey. I would even down arrow myself for that.

Rutgers's full name is Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. I think there's a state name buried in there somewhere, so it shouldn't be an answer.

Wake Forest is named for the area of Wake County, NC where it was originally founded, so it should be taken off. Northwestern was named for, and founded in, the Northwest Territory. This too should be removed.

"The foundations for Miami University were first laid by an Act of Congress signed by President George Washington, stating that an academy should be located Northwest of the Ohio River in the Miami Valley." (Miami University: Documents and Policies: General Bulletin) Reads to me that the school took its name from its location in the Miami Valley - not the tribe and not the county.

Great quiz! It would be interesting to also see a list of FBS schools not named for places originally. This would include some schools like Clemson, which are now in Clemson, SC, renamed from Calhoun in 1943.

@fakehaikuleper Regardless of being able to mail stuff there, Stanford, CA is unincorporated, not a city or town. See the notes at the top and the discussion in the archived comments. I'll also give a big thanks to those who helped me in that discussion.
