L Stanford Jr. isn't really a bonus though. It is the university's official name and is on every freaking mug they make.

Also, and this is just an aside, you should make it clear you are using a football list. Johns Hopkins is DI in some sports.

@andriy It is a bonus since NCAA uses Stanford University as the name. Also, these are not "football" schools. Some of these schools don't even have D1 football teams. NCAA officially classifies each school into a division (see source), even if they might play a sport in another division. Hopkins is officially D3.

Saint Louis? Or would you require Louis IX de France University to get on this list?

i dont understand how you five dont understand the concept? its pretty simple, think about what they say on Sportscenter intro-ing a game. do they say lets head out to the Cal vs. Leland Stanford Jr football game...nope. but they do say lets head to Virginia for the game between George Mason and James Madison.

@geowiz85: So we should leave Stanford off because people at ESPN are too lazy to use the full name, even though its official name is a person's full name? By that logic Brigham Young University shouldn't be on here, because everyone on Sportscenter calls it BYU, not Brigham Young University. Also, I agree that Johns Hopkins should be at least a bonus answer. They have D-1 lacrosse and probably others.

@ClintT13 Even Stanford shortens its own name to Stanford University (see http://www.stanford.edu/).

@ClintT...I don't think the official name is Leland Stanford Jr. That may be sort of a ceremonial designation that they use to remind people of the particular Stanford in whose honor the school was established, but in hunting around on the school's own website, particularly in the history of the school section, I can't find any reference to a name other than Stanford University. I think Stanford University IS the official name.

I think 7 minutes for 10 questions is a bit much. After I got 9, I had time to look up all the teams in the remaining conference to find the answer. Even then, I never heard of the guy. But it was the only school that made sense.

Yeah, I went there, it's Leland Stanford Jr. University. That's even a spellout in one of the major cheers. It's on the logos. If your question is "schools that are casually referred to by full names", then sure, make it a bonus. But school's named after full name, Stanford counts.

moviegoer, did you really hunt around the website that badly? http://stanford.edu/about/history/ tons of references to the fact that the school is named after Leland Jr. (son of the governor)

Stanford University
.

@ vamsi...Nobody is arguing that it's not named for Leland Jr. The point is that it could be named after Leland Jr. and still just called Stanford University. You know, since Leland Jr.'s last name was Stanford and all. By all means, please link to a page on the school's website that identifies the school as Leland Stanford Jr. University.

I wonder if six minutes is too long. For a kind of quiz as this, I feel as if it's a "you know it or you don't" situation. However, I might only feel that way because this happened to be one of the few quizzes that I fell into the "knew it" category. Other thoughts?

Usually, when I think a quiz has serious errors, the first thing I do is reread the original italicized instructions to make sure I understood what I was supposed to do. Apparently, there are at least a dozen people who don't read directions before OR after they've taken what they believe to be a suspect quiz. Sheesh.

If you are referring to Lipscomb University becoming its official name in 2005, then you have to be consistent and use Stanford's official name, Leland Stanford Jr. University.

@EDogg1438 NCAA officially recognizes Stanford as just Stanford, and I have already pointed out many times, including in the directions, that I am going by the NCAA names, which can be viewed in the source. In most cases they are the same as the official university names, but Stanford is an exception.
