You should accept Norfolk and Hampton Roads as alternatives for Virginia Beach.

It might be fun to throw in Atlanta and Sacramento as bonus answers, as their CSAs overlap state borders even though their MSAs don't.

@SamuelGompers See directions in the game notes. I stated that you have to name the largest city in the metro area. I had to do it this way because there would be too many possible answers otherwise. For example, I would have to accept at least 9 cities for Virginia Beach and many more than that for a city like New York.

The NYC tri-state area is NY - NJ - CT, not PA. Otherwise, fun quiz.

@Booger Officially it is NY - NJ - PA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York-Northern_New_Jersey-Long_Island,_NY-NJ-PA_MSA ...I didn't make these up; the U.S. Government did.

You may need to name the largest city, but considering the Hampton Roads area is called the Hampton Raods metro, whereas thee rest are called by the names of their city, this only makes sense. No one ever says the Virginia Beach Metro area. The goal is to name them, not to trick people.

Less than %25 percent of people aren't Hampton Roads because you won't accept it. Please change it.

When will people realise that official choices aren't always the same as your own choices? The MSA contains a lot of NJ and NY counties and one PA county (Pike). Deal with it. http://www.census.gov/population/www/metroareas/lists/2008/List1.txt

Nice bonus answers would be US cities that have metro areas that expand into other countries, like San Diego, Seattle, and Buffalo.

@NoFunShogun I actually thought about doing that, but officially MSAs must be entirely contained within the borders of the U.S. So actually the metros for the cities you named lie completely within the U.S. And also, I'll note that the official Seattle Metro Area doesn't even border Canada.

Thank you for Hamoton Roads. Sorry to vent, but I got all of them pretty quick except that one, and I was pretty frustrated when I saw VA Beach.

Actually New York City is NY-NJ-PA. Bridgeport and Stamford are part of their own MSA and there is one county in Pennsylvania that is part of NYC's.

The Census Bureau has so many different kinds of metropolitan area that it would be helpful to indicate which in the introduction, i.e. not CSA's like Boston including RI or New York including NJ, Pa, NY & Ct.

If you accept Hampton Roads you might as well accept Twin Cities since it is synonymous with Minneapolis metro and is a nationally know nickname for the metro.

Even if Seattle was included due to crossing into Canada maybe Vancouver would then be the biggest city in the area.

in the hampton roads area, norfolk is actually the main city. Virginia Beach is a suburb; if you ever been there you would realize it.

Seattle is a 2-3 hour drive each way to Oregon or British Columbia, and in terms of north-south, is in the center of Washington. Many other metros are closer to another state than Seattle is. Also, metro Seattle is close to a million people larger than Vancouver or Portland (though the city of Vancouver is probably somewhat larger than the city of Seattle).

trasnational border metros would make nice bonuses (san diego-tijuana, matamoros-brownsville, el paso-juarez, detroit-windsor...)

You know, in another hundred years this quiz will be pretty boring because New York City will consist of NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, NC, CT, RI, MA, VT, NH, and ME.

I realize that the directions say to name the largest city in the metro area, but I think you should accept St. Paul as well as Minneapolis (@Rogueninja though they are definitely not the same place).

This is a great quiz! However, New York's metro area is generally understood to include CT, but not PA.

Good quiz, but I missed Virginia Beach, because as biloxisean has already stated, it is basically a suburb of Norfolk (which I tried). Also, I missed one other metro, St. Louis. It is so easy to forget all about places which are in the middle of the country.

If there were a few more metros on this list, they would probably be cities like Omaha, or Chattanooga. Good quiz dude.

You would have to add quite a few to get down to Chattanooga. It's barely 1/2M.

CT is more of the NYC metro area than PA.
