Good quiz, on the original I can never remember all the various forms of Sergeant so this certainly made my job easier

"Spy" and "Flag" aren't actual military ranks? Stratego lied to me!
Sep 10th, 2012 at 16:44 GMT
I realized at the end I was putting airmen not airman

This quiz is really rewarding. In goes "officer" out comes 30 answers.

Anyone know how to properly address a Warrant Officer? How about a Specialist?
Sep 16th, 2012 at 22:52 GMT
You properly address a Specialist as "Specialist". I know it sounds odd, but it's true. You address a Warrant Officer by Mr., Mrs., or Miss. Informally, many address a Chief Warrant Officer of the various ranks as "Chief".

Everything but "specialist" (I had no idea this was an actual rank).

naval ranks are so petty.

I haven't figured out the minimum number of entries that would fill all 104 slots, but before the three service-unique single ranks of ensign, specialist and commander, I think you could fill almost all of them with sergeant, general, private, airman, seaman, captain, lieutenant, officer, major, colonel and admiral (11). And have Specialist 1st class, 2nd class, 3rd class & 4th class been supplanted? No more commodores, either. Or cadets.

@politicanny I choose to believe that's what "Joy Factor" means.

I liked it - shoulda got the one I missed. Good job!

Forgot to add corporal to that minimum list. Private, airman, seaman, corporal, sergeant, officer, lieutenant, captain, major, colonel, admiral, general (12) plus ensign, commander and specialist.

No Major Major Major Major?
Oct 10th, 2012 at 02:34 GMT
Forgot Specialist. Got confused by the placement between pvt and corporal. Specialist is a non-command line rank and there is no rank of Specialist per se. Actually should have been Spec-4 thru Spec-7. (A Spec 4 has the same pay grade (E-4) as a corporal, but does not lead troops.)

There's no Spec 4 thru Spec 7 anymore. Just specialist (E-4).

Nice quiz. I do know that Ensign is the lowest officer rank in the Navy, but I remember it best by thinking of Star Trek. Too bad for me that Specialist was not a rank in the series...

I've never loved the words Sergeant and Officer more than I do now.

Years of watching M*A*S*H paid off on this one.

Oh, man, I'm so embarrassed. My dad is a Captain in the Navy. Guess which rank I completely blanked on.
Nov 12th, 2012 at 19:06 GMT
E-4s are no longer Sergeants in the Air Force. E-4 was moved from NCO to junior enlisted tier in the 90s. They are now only addressed as Senior Airmen.

Ah, missed the least-guessed one. I truly deserve first-class corporal punishment for that major screw-up.
Nov 12th, 2012 at 21:45 GMT
specialist, come on!
Nov 12th, 2012 at 23:16 GMT
A lot of the top enlisted ranve listed here (Command Chief Master Sergeant, Command Sergeant Major, etc.) are not ranks. They are titles. There are only nine enlisted ranks in each service.

I forgot Captain too. Sorry, sirs!
Nov 13th, 2012 at 16:22 GMT
Based on the spread, I think we have too much time.
Nov 13th, 2012 at 20:24 GMT
THANK YOU, fellow veterans and those currently serving!
Nov 17th, 2012 at 03:29 GMT
yocoy: There are nine -pay grades- in each, not ranks. Some pay grades have several ranks.
Nov 30th, 2012 at 10:24 GMT
I can't believe I missed general!

My dad was in the Navy. Out of the ones I missed, most of them were in the Navy. Oops... Sorry, Dad.
