Funny how the Seminoles are on here, when the Seminole Chief has said many times that they are honored and not outraged nor offended that they are used as a mascot. You'd think that 400 years after we first took Native Americans' land, we wouldn't still be ignoring what the Native Americans think. Also, what's wrong with "Rainbow Warriors"?

On other note, this can definitely be done for professional sports teams as well. There's the Indians and Braves for MLB, the Chiefs, Raiders, and Redskins in the NFL, the Warriors in the NBA (another questionable one), the Blackhawks in the NHL, and I'm sure there's more in the MLS and CFL or that I'm just forgetting.

@redsoxfan34 I should clarify, since I ran out of room in the question at the top, that this list was published in 2004. The schools had the opportunity to appeal. Florida State indeed appealed, and the Seminoles nickname was allowed to stay. You can read more in the source.

Theoretical question: If "Fighting Sioux" and "Fighting Illini" can be considered offensive... why isn't "Fighting Irish"?

Apparently we're only worried about offending the Native Americans.

I thought Miami (OH) was called the Indians before they switched to Red Hawks?

The nickname "fighting illini" was chosen to honor alumni, staff and students of the University of Illinois who fought in World War I. What is hostile or abusive about veterans who fought and died in service of the United States? Once this was pointed out to the idiots at the NCAA, Illinois was removed from the list.

@MisterF: Not to mention "Vikings", "Minutemen", "Flying Dutchmen", "Musketeers", or "Trojans", who are often portrayed by their universities as fighting people, not unlike Native American mascots.

All the white folks who use examples of "white caricatures" are missing the point: there has been very little oppression or opprobrium directed at people of Scandinavian, Dutch/German, French or Greek descent. Not so with native Americans. Using a culture as a mascot is patronizing at best and disrespectful at its worst (Redskins?) The fact that the the head of a particular tribe supports this doesn't mean the practice is okay. Plenty of house slaves supported the Confederacy and opposed emancipation; didn't make slavery okay.

As a follow up, I will admit that the Irish have a long history of oppression in this country, so "Fighting Irish" would also fall into the category of disrespectful, but Irish-Americans seem to universally embrace the stereotype of drunken fighters (I know I do). Also, what about Stanford and Cornell? They were both Indians and changed (albeit, long ago). Also, I thing Seattle University (which is Div. 1 in basketball) used to be the Chieftains, but changed to something else.

I agree about "Redskins". Frankly, in football, it should be "Pigskins". That way the they can keep the whole "'Skins" thing. If Native Americans endorsing it doesn't matter then the same should apply to the Irish and others. Anyways, I think they have the right to use the names, but the "Fighting" in the name (rather their Irish or Illini) or use of derogatory terms like "Redskins" or debatably "Indians" is wrong, as are portraying them as ONLY fighting people.

Shouldn't St. John's be on here as well? They went from the Redmen to the Red Storm. Might've been before 2004, though. And I know they don't play football, but they are Division I in all other sports. Might need to be a bonus answer, at least.

For those suggesting additional answers, as pointed out by the wording of the quiz itself, this was a list published by the NCAA a few years ago. Just because a team changed its name at some point doesn't mean the team was on this list - many teams actually changed their names before the list was released.
Also, this probably goes without saying, but I don't necessarily agree with this list.

@ kromclovinfasho- We Rainbows do not appreciate being stereotyped as blood-thirsty 'warriors.'

@kromclovinfasho: IIRC, gay rights groups complained about the "Rainbow" portion. Or anti-gay rights groups complained about it. Either way, it had to do with gay rights.

Hold on, now I'm really confused. The linked source puts Hawai'i on the list of schools that "have either removed all references to Native American culture or were deemed to have never had references to Native American culture as part of their athletics programs". So why is it even on this quiz?

As someone who graduated from San Diego State in the 90s, the school's nickname has always been "Aztecs," not "Aztec Warriors." Aztec Warrior may have been the name of the mascot who appeared at sporting events, but we just called him "Monty." A small Native American group on campus complained about the name in the late 90s and the school's solution was to revamp the athletic logos and the mascot.

@Tahnan As I pointed out in my first comment, this original list was published in 2004. Thereafter, schools had the opportunity to make changes and/or appeal. I remember it was a pretty big deal when it was published so I thought it might make an interesting quiz.

@redsoxfan34: Why did you lump the Raiders in with pro teams that have Native American mascots? Just look at the logo. The Raiders are essentially pirates.

The whole movement to change team names is ridiculous. What harm is it doing at this point? People are just bored and don't have any real problems so they create stuff like this. Look, it's one thing for Ole Miss to have "General Reb" as mascot. Clearly all of the confederate dixie garbage needed to be erased and discredited. But I just don't see the native american imagery is as being hateful.
