	OK, I suppose "leprechaun" is fairly famous, but that didn't stop me from trying "banshee" (as well as "sidhe" and, in desperation, "Cuchulain"). I wouldn't mind seeing "banshee" accepted, since it's also a pretty famous folklore fairy.

	I'd argue against the date of independance. The Irish Free State was a self governing dominion within the British Commenwealth until the Republic of Ireland Act came into force on April 18, 1949. So you could say Ireland wasn't fully independant until that date.

	Got 40/50 and feel very ashamed! Missed out on Leprachaun, Shamrock and Guinness but got Carrauntoohil, Hyde, De Valera and Leinster House.. Seriously messed up :P Also I think gold should be acceptable for part of the tricolour and the quiz should probably be called Rep. of Ireland quiz if 26 counties is only acceptable and if Lough Neagh in Ulster is not acceptable as the biggest lake in Ireland. Great quiz though! Happy Paddy's Day! :)

	Having lived in Ireland my whole life,I didn't know the date of our independence, and I guarantee you that at least 98% of Irish people wouldn't. Also, Lucky Charms have nothing to do with Ireland and it's 'John and Edward', 'Jon' is an Americanized version.

	@catherinerose: Actually, the best way to defeat stereotypes is to laugh at them. One of the biggest comedy hits in Canada was a series of skits called "Great White North" on SCTV, wherein Canadian actors intentionally took on every Canadian stereotype possible. Toques, beer-drinking, maple syrup obsessions, ending sentences with "eh?". Were Canadians offended? Hell, no, Bob & Doug McKenzie became national heroes.

	@asleepattheline: That's what I thought, certainly, but a spot of research (trying to clarify the status of the name 'Eire') revealed that it absolutely isn't, and various people have been known to get quite cross about it! It is, apparently, the official 'description' of the country, but the official names are defined in the constitution as being 'Ireland' and 'Eire'.

	@asleepattheline: The CIA World Factbook does not list the "Republic of Ireland" as the official name of Ireland...It is simply "Ireland" according to the source, which is the primary source for Country Quizzes. I believe people refer to the country as the "Republic of Ireland" to not confuse the country with the island "Ireland".

	@ Rockgolf: Thanks for the hint, but crossing the Atlantic from France just to watch a hurling game would be a bit too much. I discovered this sport while working in an Irish pub in the UK and I found it quite impressive and just a 'tad' violent. You're right about stereotypes: having a good laugh at stereotypes doesn't mean being blinded by them and not see beyond. Not recognizing simple sarcasm is closer to ignorance. By the way, potatoes do have flowers and quite pretty ones actually. Marie-Antoinette used to wear them in her hair (but then she was Austrian, they also like spuds over there... or is it in Germany?... ;-)
