Hey All, I know there are some countries that have pretty close names or even part of the countries name in the capital. I went pretty strict on exact names for this list, but if you have some feedback and ideas let me know!

Like it! @ SoSoSmart - I guess it's not there as the country is not just Sao Tome; you need the 'and Principe' bit too. All the others are just the country name, or the country name + 'City' (or la Vella).

Algeria's capital is Algiers and Tunisia's capital is Tunis. In Turkish they have the same name for instance....

Good quiz idea - can't believe it hasn't been done yet. I'd suggest being stricter with your criteria though. If you want capital names *identical* to their country names, then you'd have to get rid of Andorra la Vella and all of the "___ City" capitals. Alternatively, you could ask for capitals whose common English names fully incorporate their common English country names. That would include all the ones in your quiz, plus (for instance) Sao Tome (Sao Tome & Principe).

If you're being so strict, why did you include Andorra la Vella? It doesn't mean Andorra City.

I think that melissa is right - you need to be specific. All the ones you've got so far include the whole country name (in common English usage) within the name of the city (in common English usage). Sao Tome, Brasilia, Algiers etc don't. If you want to stick with it as it is then maybe be more specific in the title or the directions at the top.

How do you think that should be worded then. I thought of making 2 lists, one that has the exact name like "San Marino" and the other list would have the Capital City names that are in the Countries full name, but don't make up the entire name EX: Bissau, Guinea Bissau.............If anyone has ideas on how to word this I am all ears. I agree the directions should be more clear....maybe more catergories broken up at the top....SUGGESTIONS PLEASE :)

what about breaking it up to have MAYBE three different catergories: 1. Capital City=Country (where it is exact like Monaco) 2. "_____"City (for example Mexico City) 3. Part of Country Name (like Bissau, Guinea Bissau) COMMENT ON THIS PLEASE. THANKS

Good quiz. I agree that you could reword it as you've described and include Guinea Bissau. On the other hand, I don't agree about Monaco. Monaco is the state, and Monte Carlo is the town. If the US State Department's list of capitals says "Monaco", the US State Department is wrong! (On the other hand, if that's your source maybe you should just go with what the source says!)

If you include Bissau you should include Brunei Darussalam - maybe these two should be bonus answers?
By the way, I'm glad to see Sporcle is no longer informing us about missed bonuses. An Easter Egg ain't an Easter Egg if you're told it's there.

Breaking it into categories is deinfitely the way to go. Brasilia, Algiers, Tunis and San Salvador should be included too, so they would be a fourth category, as in 'Very similar name'.

@abanazerb: The US state dept reference is correct. Monaco is a single municipality. See http://www.gouv.mc/devwww/wwwnew.nsf/1909$/a8b26f5b0407a270c1256f58004b14b6gb?OpenDocument&Count=10000&InfoChap=Institutions%20&InfoSujet=La%20Commune&3Gb, or http://www.monaco-mairie.mc/02_mairie/prero/prero_bs.php.

I don't suppose the countries could be acceptable as well? The '______' City category's requirement of only having to type in the country rather than the full City name made me stuff up with the final column and I couldn't work out why Brazil and El Salvador wouldn't work.

Even though on Sporcle we accept Vatican for Vatican City the country, you need to bump the country over to the country = capital column.

You need to change the title, because it says to name the countries when you actually want the name of the capital cities. Other than that, great quiz!

Actually, you do accept the country for some, but not for others (andorra vs brazil). You should be consistent in accepting one or the other or both for all the answers.

You mean I typed Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte for nothing? (Seriously though, you should add this as a bonus. It is the official capital of Sri Lanka, where as Colombo is only designated as a "commercial city")
