It’s produced from ‘scrumptious’ by the process of infixation — like a prefix or suffix, only the particle (‘diddly’) gets stuck in the middle, not at either end (and in this case, the ‘um’ gets reduplicated around it). It’s fairly rare in English, commoner in some other languages. Other famous examples: ‘abso-flaming-lutely’, ‘Tumba-bloody-rumba’, ‘West By God Virginia’. (Look ’em up — good stories one and all!) |
