I wanted to keep the theme consistent and go with $20 million players, but 9 players didn't seem enough. And before anyone questions it, Clemen's 2006 salary was for $22 million, but it was prorated and he received around $12 million.

No, the Phillies are dumb. Ryan Howard is a 30-year-old no-field first baseman who is three years removed from his last really good season, and the Phillies made him one of the highest-paid players in the game. It was a deeply stupid thing to do, and if you can't see that, I humbly propose that you have no place calling other people dumb.

Howard has hit 229 HRs in the last 5 seasons. In case that's too much math for you to understand, it's a lot of HRs. And Howard is nowhere near the most overpaid on this list so it's strange that you chose to single him out. Barry Zito and Carlos Lee are both much less deserving of their contracts, as is Alfonso Soriano. And I would hesitate to call a team that has made back-to-back World Series appearances "dumb", especially when they are primed to make another. And I say that as a huge Giants fan. I humbly propose that you try to have some knowledge of what you're talking about the next time you try to sound intelligent.

Ryan Howard has on base percentages of .339, .360, and .353 over the last three seasons, all fairly pedestrian numbers -- the first of them downright bad. He's a glorified Dave Kingman. They're paying him like he's a superstar, when in fact he's a slightly above average player not likely to age well. If you're not bright enough to understand how baseball works, I'd suggest you keep your thoughts to yourself. The Phillies are a good team, it's true. But it's because of Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, Cole Hamels, and a host of others, not because of Ryan Howard.

Wrong again, LinuxLinus. I agree that those OBP numbers are unimpressive, but each one of them -- even .339 -- is above the league average. So to call it "downright bad" is downright wrong. Also, the Phillies aren't paying Howard to get on base. They're paying him to hit for power. Which he does very very well. And in case you missed my point in the last comment, I agree that Howard is overpaid, just not nearly as overpaid as several others on that list.
