	Lots of a's, b's and c's there ... presumably as we work our way through the 013's, 014's, 015's it (vaguely) follows the alphabet?

	That's more or less right... It follows an alphadial pattern; 2=ABC 3=DEF etc So using this theory, the UK area codes follow some vague rules (not always though), but for example, Blackpool = 01 2 (B) 5 (L) xx and one more example - 01252 = Aldershot 2=A ,5=L

	Some of these are technically incorrect. Without going too deep into Post office telephone's STD history, Bishop's Stortford is the "parent" exchange for the code 01279, not Harlow, that is why the alpha dial pattern does not work for Harlow. The same goes for Newport which is "parented by Chepstow. Llanelli is Ammanford, Irvine is Ardrossan and Redruth is Camborne. This is not a criticism but just for information purposes from someone who used to wire up the code "translations" in an old STD exchange.
