Since I know there will be some comments: some of the clues, especially the Europe clue, are wordy/convoluted by design. It really was unavoidable to avoid ambiguity. Check my source before you contest the answers (it's at the top of the screen). And since I know someone will say it, France is not entirely in Europe, and the portion that is in Europe is smaller than the country listed. If you have suggestions for additions to the quiz, definitely let me know! Thanks!

Excellent to see this sequel. Also - your source suggests that the longest country ending in 'land' is Greenland - oops! It's only the CIA, what would they know. I am having trouble with suggestions this time - how about 'largest country bordering Iran' or 'largest monarchy'? Also possible, largest island nation (excluding continents)

Iceland maintains no military forces, and is bigger than Costa Rica

@Chipmunkdavis: That one was slightly arbitrary, and I see why there was some confusion on it. Iceland, however, does keep a military expeditionary peacekeeping force (petty, I know). Here is the Wikipedia article I used in compiling this quiz, and it seems quite comprehensive in scope: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_without_armed_forces

Golden, Greenland usually isn't counted as a country on Sporcle, just like Palestine (which I believe the CIA also considers to be one or two "countries").

You spelled "autonomous" wrong. Other than that, pretty good quiz.

I would have wagered that Poland was bigger than Thailand. I just did the math. Not only is Thailand bigger, it's bigger by 39%! Awesome--I love quizzes that compel me to rethink the way I picture the world.

@sunshine423: Thank you! I'm not even close to a spelling bee champion, and I'm likewise not autonomous when it comes to spelling words correctly. I'll make that change.

Great quiz. My only question is whether or not Taiwan is a country. Isn't the reason that it's not part of the UN because it's now recognized as a part of China?

I agree with with apeuroboff. Although it's Sporcle convention for Taiwan to be considered a country, it is supposedly represented in the U.N. by China.

How about biggest landlocked country? Biggest country with no "A"? Biggest country that didn't exist in 1975? Biggest country with no letters from the word "biggest"?

@BigSnax69: Then go make a better one. And Taco Bell has yet to go to Russia. @shanchuk/apeurobuff: All I've got for you is the disclaimer at the top of the screen. With so many possible definitions of what a country is, we eventually have to agree to something, and for this site, Taiwan is a country.

Damn this site and its Kosovo and Taiwan. I still think Iceland should be the largest, it has about 7 coast guard ships? Having a peacekeeping force isn't that important. At any rate, their defense is in the hands of the USA i believe. Let's face it, it is on wikipedia's list of countries without armed forces! Maybe you could put it as a bonus at least, with the hint explaining?

@MessiMagic: As much as I love seeing Kyrgyzstan on Sporcle quizzes, Kazakhstan is the biggest in that category (check my source if you don't believe me). In fact, Kyrgyzstan is also smaller than Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and is less than 10% of the size of Kazakhstan.

Excellent quiz. I like the ideas of caramba - largest 'new' country would be interesting, if you exclude USSR. Many answers would be Russia though and I like the fact that these all have different answers! Is there a way of asking the question of who has the most overseas territories by area? The answer, from what I can tell, is the UK - "British Antarctic Territory" which is the same size as Libya and greater in area than the UK, France and Germany combined!

@Billy: I thought the same thing. I guess that's the Mercator projection rearing its ugly head again -- Finland looks much bigger on a map relative to its actual size than countries closer to the equator.

For some stupid reason I didn't think of the US as the largest country starting with a vowel. It's like the two capitals named after US presidents. It is easy to forget your own.

@XYlophonetreeZ: you're not kidding, it took a while to make my Border Country Marathon and Biathlon quiz series Southern Sudan compliant. Southern Sudan is a bonus answer now but come July 9, 2011 it will become a regular answer. If they decide to call themselves South Sudan at the last moment I'm not going to be happy.

The UN question might be a needlessly controversial addition. Somalialand is a self-declared state with no recognition and it is significantly larger than Taiwan. Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic has recognition by a significant number of states and is also significantly larger than the Republic of China
