Had to look up Phil Niekro's stats after this. Wow, what a workhorse! From 1977-1979 he threw more than 1000 innings and he turned 40 in 1979. After that he still had enough left in the tank to win another 100 games before he retired.

Workhorse, yes, but a knuckler can throw so many more pitches than a "regular" pitcher that you just can't compare, other than the fact that they are doing the same job.

Yeah, certainly a knuckleballer is a different animal, but still pretty amazing. Nowadays the average is about one pitcher per team that even throws 200 innings in a season. Imagine Niekro, when he was between 38 and 40, averaged over 330 innings per year from 77-79.

Dan Quisenberry might be the most underrated pitcher in baseball history. Look at some of his 40-save seasons ... instead of getting one-inning saves like modern guys, he was going three and even four innings. Imagine a reliever throwing 140 innings in the current climate. It would NEVER happen. If the Royals hadn't waited so long to call him up (they were scared of his funky delivery) he would be in the hall of fame.

ClintT13: I know Joe Posnanski has written a lot about Dan Quisenberry and the Hall of Fame. He compares really well to Bruce Sutter (as well as some other relievers that aren't in, which is less promising). They're always good pieces, though.

I've been a Jays fan all my life and I can't believe I missed Stieb. I forgot how good that guy was.

Stieb is another player that I've seen very good Hall of Fame arguments for. I know the Hall of Merit inducted him into their mock Hall, at least.

Clint -- Definitely glad to see the love for the Quiz. Especially since the other day somebody made a quiz on here that said Brady Quinn was the best athlete starting with Q... as a royals fan who grew up in the early 80's I wanted to gag.
