	Actually these are the Four FINA sanctioned strokes for swimming. Strokes such as Sidestroke etc. do not exist in competitive swimming. As for the Front Crawl... Freestyle is the actual name of the stroke, often shortened to just free. In my 8 years of competitive swimming I have never heard it referenced as the Front Crawl. Only as a little kid taking swim lessons

	i agree with Dann127. while freestyle technically means any stroke, in competitive swimming, most people choose to do crawl. Which is a little kid term. So, "free" has come to mean front crawl. Also, these are the COMPETITIVE swimming strokes, not just any stroke you learn in a swim lesson.

	Actually in the rule book it is referred to as front crawl... And I'm talking THE rule book. I official for summer league meets over the summer and I had to know it somewhat kinda...

	mj6991- but the events are called the 100 freestyle, the 50 freestyle, etc. It is as far as YMCA or USA swimming anyway...
